Yankees 7, Blue Jays 2: Cano hits two two-run homers

Jim McIsaac

Today the Yankees were led by Robinson Cano and David Phelps. Cano ended the day with two two-run home runs and Phelps had the longest outing of his career. It was a nice easy game for the Yankees, who go to 27-16 on the season and maintain their lead on the division.

David Phelps started off the game rather shaky. In the first inning he walked two, but also struck out two and then picked Jose Bautista off second base. In the third inning he gave up a single to Maicer Izturis and a bunt single to Emilio Bonifacio, but got Melky Cabrera to ground into a double play to avoid an early jam. He then walked Bautista and struck out Edwin Encarnacion. Phelps didn't walk another batter, but struck out a ton.

Jayson Nix had the Yankees' first hit of the afternoon in the third inning. David Adams hit the ball back to Brandon Morrow, but he dropped the ball and could only get the out at first. Brett Gardner then singled on the first pitch he saw to score Nix and Robinson Cano hit a wall-scraping two-run home run to right field to make it 3-0 Yankees.

The Blue Jays scored their lone run off Phelps in the fourth inning. Adam Lind hit a hard double and Colby Rasmus lasered a long single off the outfield wall to make it 3-1.

In the fifth inning Austin Romine singled and Cano hit his second two-run home run of the day. This one was no Yankee Stadium cheapie, this one went a long way to right-centerfield.

David Phelps pacified the Blue Jays and handed the game over the David Robertson in the eighth. Unfortunately, D-Rob was not too sharp today and almost made the game close. Encarnacion hit a home run, but it could have been worse as David Adams made a diving stop at third base to get the previous runner. Robertson recovered and got out of the inning.

The Yankees answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Vernon Wells reached on a throwing error by shortstop Maicer Izturis and Travis Hafner made them pay for hit with a two-run home run. Hafner's home run made it a five-run game, allowing Mariano Rivera to give way to Boone Logan to close out the game.

David Phelps had the longest outing of his career, going seven innings, striking out eight, walking three and giving up one run. David Robertson gave up one run on two hits and got one strikeout and Boone Logan collected two.

The Yankees offense had eight hits from Gardner, Cano (2), Wells, Travis Hafner, Lyle Overbay, Nix and Romine. The offense didn't get any walks, but struck out six times. Curtis Granderson, back from his day off, did nothing and David Adams went hitless for the first time in his career.

Cano's two home runs made him the American League leader (12) for a few minutes before Mark Reynolds tied him and Encarnacion tied them. The three players are now tied with Paul Goldschmidt for second place in MLB. Today's game was Cano's twelfth multi-home run game of his career.
