Yankees 5, Blue Jays 0: Hiroki Kuroda allows only two hits

USA TODAY Sports

Hiroki Kuroda stole the show tonight by pitching eight innings without giving up a run. He gave up a double to Melky Cabrera, the first batter of the game, and didn't give up another hit until the seventh inning. He also walked Munenori Kawasaki in the third, but Kuroda quickly picked him off a few pitches later. Both pitchers started off slowly, but soon found their groove. The Yankees eventually got to Mark Buehrle, but Kuroda was dominate throughout the night.

The Yankees started the game off strong when Brett Gardner tripled on the second pitch of the game. Jayson Nix walked on four pitches and then Robinson Cano grounded out to second base to score the first run.

The Yankees couldn't get anything going against Buehrle until the fifth inning. David Adams and Austin Romine both singled and Brett Gardner walked. Nix hit a fly ball to drive in Adams and make it 2-0 Yankees.

In the bottom of the seventh the baby bombers struck again as Adams hit a ground-rule double. Ichiro Suzuki hit a bunt single up the third base line to put runners on the corners and Romine doubled off the left field wall to drive in another run and knock out Buehrle. Aaron Loup came in and promptly gave up a single to Gardner that scored a run and then Nix hit another fly ball to make it a 5-0 game.

Kuroda's final line was two hits, one walk and five strikeouts in eight innings. He threw 109 pitches, 68 of which were strikes, and got eight ground ball outs against seven fly ball outs. He was relieved in the top of the ninth by Preston Claiborne, who made things a little interesting. He struck out Kawasaki, but then gave up a single and a double to make everyone uneasy. He got J.P. Arencibia to pop out in foul territory to Austin Romine, who made a diving play to end the game.

Gardner (2), Lyle Overbay, Adams (2), Ichiro, and Romine (2) had the Yankees hits for the night, while Gardner and Nix (2) had the Yankees walks. The 3-4-5 hitters went 0-12 with four strikeouts and seven runners left in scoring position (Cano left five all by himself).

It's good to see that the Yankees can find a way to win even when the heart of the lineup can't get anything going. Seeing Adams and Romine power the offense is nice to see and hopefully they keep it up. Adams has gotten a hit in every game he's started so far and Preston Claiborne has still not been scored on in his MLB career. Once again Ben Francisco proves that he doesn't belong in a major league lineup.
