Yankees 11, Royals 6: Overbay collects five RBIs

Lyle Overbay is super tiny - Jamie Squire

Phil Hughes was back to his meatball-throwing self today after a nice stretch of effectiveness. Despite his best efforts to give this game away the Yankees offense took it to the Royals to make sure they won this game. Hughes gave up six runs on seven hits, two walks, three strikeouts, and hit a batter in 5.2 innings. Everyone but him and Vernon Wells did something good tonight.

In the top of the second inning, the Yankees got the game rolling with two home runs. Travis Hafner walked and Ichiro Suzuki hit a home run. Jayson Nix then doubled and Lyle Overbay hit another two-run home run to make it a 4-0 game.

Not wanting the game to get out of hand for the Royals too quickly, Hughes immediately let them back into the game. He walked Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez singled, he proceeded to strike out the next two batter, then gave up a three-run home run against Jarrod Dyson to make the game 4-3. This was Dyson's first MLB home run since 2010 and only the second of his career, so of course that happened.

The Yankees would score again in the bottom of the fourth as Nix walked and Overbay hit a double off the outfield wall, just missing another home run. Jayson Nix came around to score, sliding just under the tag at the plate to make it 5-3. Hughes blew the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain singled and scored on an Alex Gordon double to tie the game at 5-5.

The offense then got sick of Hughes and decided to make the game out of reach in the sixth inning. Ichiro doubled and Nix singled to chase starter Wade Davis from the game. Bruce Chen came in and promptly let Overbay hit yet another long double off the wall that just missed landing in the seats to make it 6-5. Even Chris Nelson did something by singling in two runs to add to the lead. Chris Stewart then hit into a force out, Brett Gardner tripled to score another run, and Robinson Cano singled to score him, giving the Yankees a commanding 10-5 lead. Chen had entered the game with a 0.00 ERA, but by the time he left he had a 2.03 ERA.

Joe Girardi allowed Hughes to start the bottom of the sixth inning, thinking the lead was safe, but then Mike Moustakas hit a home run and the score was 10-6 and everyone got scared. Shawn Kelley came in and proceeded to strike out six of seven batters in 2.1 innings pitched to ease everyone's concerns

The Yankees tacked on one more run in the top of the ninth when Ichiro singled and stole second and Overbay singled him in to make the score 11-6. Boone Logan came in for the bottom of the ninth to fill in for a depleted bullpen and struck out two.

By the end of the night Ichiro and Overbay, who collected five RBIs, were each a triple away from the cycle and Joe Girardi obtained his 500th win as a manager. The Yankees say you're welcome, Joe.
