Yankees 0, Phillies 7: A Loss

USA TODAY Sports

Hiroki Kuroda was rolling, until a error, and then he wasn't rolling. Also the offense wasn't rolling at all.

Hiroki Kuroda got the start for the Yankees and made it through 3.2 innings looking really good, until an error on a play that should have gotten him out of the inning, kept him in the inning and lead to four Phillie runs.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Kuroda walked Chase Utley. Next up was Ryan Howard. Howard grounded to second baseman Gil Velazquez. The grounder probably should have been an inning-ending double play, but Velazquez couldn't make the play and his error allowed Utley to advance to third, leaving two on with one out. The next Phillie batter was Dominic Brown. That didn't go well. Brown smashed a home run over the right field wall to give the Phillies 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Jermaine Mitchell tripled off Kuroda, and scored on a single by Yuniesky Betancourt, to make it 4-0. Kuroda held the Phillies to just those four runs that inning, but even the two other outs that inning were both hit fairly hard. HIROK went two more innings, getting out of some trouble in the sixth. On the day, Kuroda went 6 innings, allowing six hits, striking out two and walking one.

Mariano Rivera made his second appearance of the spring, getting in an inning of work. He walked Steven Lerud to start the inning, but got next batter Ben Revere to ground into a double play. Mo finished his inning of work by striking out Michael Young.

Meanwhile, the Yankee offense didn't have a banner day.

Derek Jeter lead off the game for the Yankees with a well hit double. Next batter Ichiro, grounded into a fielder's choice, on which Jeter was out trying to advance to third. Trying for third wasn't the best decision by Derek. Kevin Youkilis was next up for the Yankees, and he lined out Ryan Howard at first, who doubled off Ichiro. That inning set the trend for the Yankees' day.

The Yankees got close to scoring in the third inning. Brett Gardner lead off the inning, and reached on a bunt single. Gil Velazquez singled, advancing Gardner to third with just one out. Jeter and Ichiro weren't able to bring Gardner home.

The Phillies added three more runs in the ninth inning. With Shawn Kelley on the mound for the Yankees, Betancourt doubled, and next batter Lerud homered to make it 6-0 for the Phillies. With two out, Freddy Galvis doubled off Kelley and came around to score on Pete Orr's triple to make it 7-0.

The closest the Yankees got to scoring was in the ninth inning. Luke Murton singled, and Eduardo Sosa and Ramon Flores walked to load the bases with two outs. Next batter Reggie Corona popped up to end the game, however.

Regulars

Jeter was 1-2, Ichiro 0-3. Kevin Youkilis was 1-3, smashing a well-hit double in the sixth inning. Brett Gardner was 1-3 and Travis Hafner was 0-3.

Playing For a Job

Juan Rivera was 0-3, but made a few decent plays at first base. Brennan Boesch made his Yankee debut, starting in right field. He went 0-3. Chris Stewart was 0-2 with a walk, but threw out the fantastically named Ender Inciarte trying to steal second. Zoilo Almonte was 0-1.

Assorted Others

Gil Velazquez went 1-2. Walter Ibarra was 2-2. Addison Maruszak was 0-1 and Bobby Wilson 0-1.

Pitching

Kuroda was okay for four of his six innings, and Mo was good for his one. David Aardsma came in to pitch the eighth. The Aardvark struck out one and walked one. Shawn Kelley pitched the ninth inning, and as mentioned above, that didn't go well.

The Yankees are back again later today, as the rest of their split squad plays the Braves at 5:05 eastern.
