Around the World:
The Yankees have many questions going into the 2013 season. Who will be the catcher? Can they hit lefties? Can they stay healthy? Are they too old? Can they fill out their roster? If you include the new Yankee budget and voiding Alex Rodriguez's contract, you have everything issue the team is currently facing.
The old tale about how the Yankees could have traded a young Mariano Rivera for Felix Fermin in 1996 is retold by Brian Chasman. The trade would have been franchise-altering because Fermin would have replaced Derek Jeter as shortstop to begin the season and the organization would have lost their future closer. This story kind of sums up just how awful George Steinbrenner was at making baseball decisions. Thankfully, the people paid to make those decisions were allowed to make the right one.
Ronnier Mustelier is getting a long look at third base to see if he can play the position well enough for Kevin Youkilis to move to first base. Since he can play the corner outfield positions, as well, he might have a real shot to make the team. The Yankees are likely to go with four of Juan Rivera, Matt Diaz, Dan Johnson, Melky Mesa, and Mustelier. Choosing him would give give the team more options in the infield, as well as the outfield.
David Phelps is attempting to win a spot in the rotation over Ivan Nova and, while he is impressing people as a starter, he will help the team in anyway he can, even if it means as a reliever. He doesn't believe he is competing against Nova, he goes out there and competes against himself.
Injury Updates: The Yankees have several injured pitchers, and while Clay Rapada has been shut down, Boone Logan has started throwing pain free and CC Sabathia has been going along consistently after having elbow surgery in the offseason. Sabathia seems fine, Logan might need to be monitored throughout the year and Rapada could be fine for Opening Day, but if not it could open the door for another pitcher.
Plans to Recovery: Jeter will be DHing again today against the Cardinals and Rivera will be throwing another bullpen, before he gets in another game on Wednesday.
Wrist Injuries: Mark Teixeira doesn't have the same injury that forced Jose Bautista to miss most of the second half of 2012 and need surgery. Bautista tore the sheath that protects the tendon, while Tex has merely strained the tendon without tearing it.
