Holy cow! This was a pretty miserable game. Definitely not a dumpster fire, thankfully. The offense did manage to score a decent amount of runs and not all the pitchers were awful. The Yankees infield was also pretty lousy. The things that were bad were just really bad.
Hiroki Kuroda began the game, and his spring, on the wrong foot. He walked Jimmy Rollins, then gave up a single to Ben Revere. Chase Utley then reached base after first baseman Kyle Roller committed an error and Rollins was able to score. Kuroda gave up another run as he managed to get Ryan Howard to hit into a double play. 2-0
In the second inning, with two outs, the defense unravels even further. Youkilis misplayed a John Mayberry in-between hopper down the line. Eduardo Nunez then got eaten up by a ball as he tried to cover second base against the stealing Mayberry. With runners on second and third, Rollins lasered a double to the right field wall, making the score 4-0 and chasing Kuroda from the game. Robertson then came in an struck out the only batter he saw.
In the seventh inning Cody Eppley gave up two singles and Addison Maruszak committed an error (his second of the game) at third, allowing a run to score. Eppley then proceded to walk in a run and another run scored on a sacrifice fly before Girardi pulled him in favor of Preston Claiborne. Unfortunately, the first batter he faced popped a bloop single into the outfield to score another run and make it 10-4. When everything was said and done, Yankee pitching gave up 10 runs, on 10 hits, while walking seven.
The hitting showed some promise for the first time in a few games. The Yankees loaded the bases in the first inning after Francisco Cervelli beat out an infield grounder, Kevin Youkilis walked, and Juan Rivera hit an infield single up the middle that Rollins couldn't get to. Unfortunately, Melky Mesa would strikeout with the bases loaded.
In the third inning Cervelli hit a double and Robinson Cano hit a single through short to score the Yankees' first run. Rivera hit a double down the line to make it second and third, but Melky Mesa struck out again. 6-1
In the fifth inning Cervelli walked, Cano hit a single up the middle and Maruszak hit a double off the left field wall to score two runs. Mesa hit a routine infield fly ball that was dropped by Kevin Frandsen to make it first and third. Melky was then able to steal second base, but Thomas Neal and Kyle Roller both struck out. 6-3
Ronnier Mustelier homered in the sixth and Melky Mesa homered in the seventh. 10-5
Standouts: Cervelli hit a single, a double, walked and even caught another runner stealing at second. Granted, Jimmy Rollins thought it was ball four, but still. Juan Rivera got a single and a double, Addison Maruszak hit a double and a single, and Ronnier Mustelier hit one out and walked. Melky Mesa had an odd day; he struck out twice, reached on an error, stole a base and hit a home run. Tools. By the end of the day the Yankees offense had 12 hits, three walks and 12 strike outs.
The fielding atrocities continued as Kyle Roller, Kevin Youkilis, Addison Maruszak, and Addison Maruszak committed errors.
