New York Yankees News & Notes: 2/5/13

Steve Ruark

Jeterian ProgressJeter is progressing in his rehabilitation from ankle surgery. He has started fielding grounders on grass, but has yet to move around or play the field. Since Spring Training doesn't start for another week, he hasn't begun a full routine yet. It isn't known yet when he'll be ready to play in a Spring Training game, but he should still be on schedule for opening day.

What Would Jeter Say: Derek Jeter had this to say about the Alex Rodriguez PED allegations.

I don't comment on anyone until they speak first. Let him address his situation before I comment on it. Let him speak first and then we'll talk about that.

Youk on YES: The YES Network will be having a Kevin Youkilis-centered episode of Yankee Access. He'll be showing off his new batting stance, talking about Tom Brady, and reflecting on being a Jewish baseball player. The Yankees really want their fans to like this guy. Go read what Tom Brady had to say about Youk dating his sister.

The ZiPS Projections Are Here: Fangraphs provides the ZiPS projections for the 2013 New York Yankees roster, minor league free agents and several prospects. They also break down the team's hitting, pitching, bench, and depth.

Flip-Flop the Fielders: The Yankees may or may not be considering switching Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner in the outfield, maybe. Cashman has said things like "I guess" and "I don't know yet," but he did call Gardner "a center fielder playing left field." So maybe that could be a thing that happens at some point, but don't hold your breath.

Best/Worst Case Scenario: LoHud goes through the best and worst case scenarios for Yankee pitching in 2013. CC, Andy Pettitte and Hiroki Kuroda could be a strong top three, while Michael Pineda could come back strong and be the pitcher they thought they were getting last year. Worst case scenario seems to revolve around the failure of old pitching and the rest of the staff's inability to make up for the loss.

Awards for the Big Man: CC Sabathia received the Thurman Munson Award, an award that is presented to athletes for their on field success and off field philanthropic works. David Phelps was also awarded the Rising Star Award.
