Bronx Baseball Daily ranks the Top 50 prospects in the Yankees system. That sounds like a lot and most of them will probably have no impact on the organization, but it's interesting to learn about the less publicized prospects. Aside from the regular suspects, people like Rafael DePaula, RHP (#13), Angel Rincon, RHP (#18), Peter O'Brien, C (#20), Greg Bird, 1B (#22), and Daniel Camarena, LHP (#24) rank in the Top 25.
Brian Cashman will not take the Alex Rodriguez contract into consideration when dealing with Robinson Cano. Whatever value the team has gotten from the A-Rod contract is a separate issue and will have no bearing on negotiating a new contract with Cano.
Tyler Austin talks about what it has been like being drafted and now playing for his favorite team. He spoke about overcoming setbacks like injury and testicular cancer and how he will prepare for the coming season.
The Yankee Analysts point out that Zoilo Almonte and Melky Mesa are the two best in-house candidates to fill in for the injured Curtis Granderson. As a switch hitter, Almonte has been better against righties throughout his career, while Mesa has a reverse platoon split as a right-handed batter and has a much higher OPS against righties. Both seem to be able to take on the bulk of a platoon role, so both could end up thriving in the short time they are needed.
Conversely, they also believe it's time for a trade. Of the minor league outfielder options, like Melky Mesa, Zoilo Almonte, and Ramon Flores, Mesa is the only player with any Triple-A experience. Due to the lack of talent, the Yankees need to make a trade, but not for Alfonso Soriano. Casper Wells and Tyler Colvin are named as potential targets.
NoMaas argues that trading for Alfonso Soriano would be a good idea if Granderson was projected to miss most of the season. He could even play a role on the team in 2014 when Granderson is gone. However, he is also too expensive, both in money and prospects to be a legitimate possibility.
Kevin Youkilis has a very mild oblique strain, but he says he feels fine and could go out and play. Following the injury to Granderson the Yankees are unlikely to take an chances at all when dealing with an injury. If Youk aggravates it and misses time then the team would be in serious trouble. As of right now, it's just a precaution.
