New York Yankees News & Notes: 2/21/13

The most miserable multi-millionaire - Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Remember This Guy: Even though Cesar Cabral won't be healthy by Opening Day, he could still play an important role for the Yankees. As a Rule V draft pick, he can stay on the roster if he's on the Disabled List for some time. If the current lefty Yankees, Boone Logan and Clay Rapada, have health issues, Cabral could be useful to fill their role.

Contract Talks: There has been talk between both parties about retaining Robinson Cano. Hal Steinbrenner stated that they had briefly discussed the possibility of a long term extension with Cano's agent, Scott Boras. In turn, Boras simply stated that it is something they can work out. Whether this actually leads to an extension before the end of the year or preliminary talks for next offseason has yet to be seen. Would it be smarter for the Yankees to extend Cano now, or wait until he's a free agent?

Sabathia in the Spring: The Yankees will be slowing CC Sabathia's spring in an attempt to keep him fresh for when the season starts. He's coming off elbow surgery and as a pitcher in his 30s, trying to keep the ace of the team healthy is a big concern. If CC is held back until March he might not be completely worked out by April, so the early part of the year could act as an almost extended spring training for him. There's no need to push him hard in the first month or two of the season if there's no need to.

Soriano to the Yankees?:The Greedy Pinstripes propose a trade for Alfonso Soriano to serve as the right hand hitting outfielder that the team is still looking for. The trade includes giving the Cubs JR Murphy, Brett Marshall, and Greg Bird, which seems like a steep price even if Soriano is under contract for another two seasons. Jon Heyman doesn't think the Yankees would give up good prospects for him, but they would take on around $10M of the $36M left. What would be a fair price for Soriano?

Steinbrenner Spending: Sources believe that the Yankee payroll budgeting mandate of $189M might soon be out the window. It was previously believed that the organization was to receive $60M in rebates and luxury tax reductions, but now that the Braves, Blue Jays and Nationals all look to have successful seasons this year, the final dollar amount looks to be less than originally thought. This could lead the Yankees to abandon their plans and start spending like the Yankees usually do. Hal Steinbrenner was reportedly stunned that Yankee fans had negative reactions towards the payroll. Not wanting to be viewed as cheap, he might change his mind, especially with Robinson Cano needing a new contract.

DUI Charges: Michael Pineda pled no contest to his pending DUI charges. He was given the minimum sentence for a first time offender: 12 months parole, 50 hours of community service, 10 day vehicle impoundment, 6 month licence suspension, and a $500 fine.

Quote of the Day: David Price recently had some things to say about how he could never be a New York Yankee because he would have to shave his beard. Derek Jeter responded in kind:

Do you really think some player would say no, all things considered, if it was a good deal for them? I'm not talking about his situation, but if it was a good deal for a player, I'm pretty sure most guys - maybe not all guys - would have no trouble shaving. Maybe it means a lot to him. I don't know. - Derek Jeter
