New York Yankees Spring Training News: Day 5

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Look Who's Coming to Camp: Jorge Posada will be in camp this year as a special guest instructor, however Joe Girardi doesn't know exaclty when he'll be in camp. Most instructors come to camp when the games start up, which won't happen for another week still.

A Change in Workload: The minor leaguers have already faced hitters and several of the pitchers have talked about how their offseason instructions included an earlier throwing program, however Brian Cashman has stated that it has nothing to do with a change in philosophy. Due to the new basic agreement Spring Training is shorter and that means there's less time to get ready before spring training games start up. The first game this year is February 23rd, whereas last year it was March 2nd.

Mending Mariano: Mariano Rivera doesn't seem to be worried about how his knee will hold up while pitching. What he's worried about is how it will affect his fielding and he can only know that when he gets into a game. "Bunting. Comebackers. Cover first. All that stuff. You can't think, you have to react. That will be, I would say, the biggest test." Rivera is wearing a small knee brace that he will most likely wear during the regular season.

Staying in Camp: Francisco Cervelli has decided to back out of the World Baseball Classic in favor of staying in camp to try and win a job on the major league team. He was not pressured by the team to stay in camp, but Cervelli felt he needed to concentrate on beating out his competition. The Yankees will still have two representatives in the WBC, Mark Teixeira for Team USA and Robinson Cano for the Dominican Republic.

Bullpen Sessions: CC Sabathia threw his first bullpen session which consisted of fastballs and change ups. He joked that he probably didn't throw any strikes, but his elbow felt fine. Once games start up he probably won't be making a start the first time through the rotation. Speaking of CC, he had only nice things to say about Felix Hernandez making more money than him. That's a relief.
