New York Yankees News & Notes: 2/15/13

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Retirement: Miguel Cairo has announced his retirement and accepted a job as a special assistant in the Reds organization. Why is this mentioned here? Cairo was a member of the New York Yankees in 2004, 2006 and parts of 2007, so here's to you, Miguel!

Hoping for Hughes: Impending free agent Phil Hughes knows that the Yankees' goal is to reduce payroll and that may exclude him from their future plans, but all he hopes for in 2013 is something he has lacked: consistency. After straining his hamstring in his second career start, Hughes admits to developing bad habits that messed with his delivery and mechanics, but pitching coach Larry Rothschild has been working with Hughes to correct those alterations in hopes of getting Hughes back to where he was before.

Contract Extension: Hal Steinbrenner admitted that the team has begun discussing a multi-year extension with Robinson Cano, but the two sides are still quite a ways away from coming to any sort of agreement. While the Yankees acknowledge that Cano is one of the top 10 or 15 players in baseball, Cano and Boras believe that's selling the second baseman a little short. Whether the two sides can bridge the gap and come to an agreement that both can live with remains to be seen, but it at least represents moving in the right direction if the plan is truly to keep Cano in the Bronx past this season, because letting other teams get involved in the bidding process can only stand to drive up the price that the Yankees would ultimately have to pay to keep their homegrown star from playing for a different team in 2014.

Spring Training Televised: YES has announced that it will televise 19 Spring Training games in February and March. The first game, against Toronto, is on February 24th. The Yanks play the Red Sox on March 3rd and March 20th, the Dominican Republic WBC team on March 6th, the Nationals on March 29th in DC, and Army on March 30th at West Point. Also keep on the lookout for more Lou Piniella among your other YES Network favorites.
