Revisiting the Pinstripe Alley preseason MLB predictions

Walk-off obstruction call? I'm sure we all called it. - Rob Carr

What hell hath the PSA staff wrought on the 2013 season?

Way back on March 27th, members of the Pinstripe Alley writing staff were asked to answer various questions about how the 2013 baseball season would shake out. At the end of the regular season, we revisited the staff's Yankees predictions, and now that all the playoffs and awards for the season are complete, we can check out the staff's MLB prediction results. So how did we do?

1. How will the standings in each division look at the end of the season?

Results
AL East: Red Sox/Rays/Orioles-Yankees/Blue Jays
AL Central: Tigers/Indians/Royals/Twins/White Sox
AL West: Athletics/Rangers/Angels/Mariners/Astros
NL East: Braves/Nationals/Mets/Phillies/Marlins
NL Central: Cardinals/Pirates/Reds/Brewers/Cubs
NL West: Dodgers/Diamondbacks/Giants-Padres/Rockies

One point for each correct place, and an extra point for guessing the division champion. People who guessed the Yankees, Orioles, Giants, and Padres in either 3rd or 4th will get credit since they tied in their respective divisions.

5. Who will be the biggest surprise of the season?

Judging this prediction will be kind of subjective, but I think we can determine the players or teams succeeded in surprising or not. One point for each.

Andrew: Mariners (13)
Tanya: Jesus Montero (14)
Jason: Pirates and Scott Kazmir (15)
Greg: Pirates (16)
Matt F1: Yankees (14)
Craig: Dillon Gee (16)
Mason: Kansas City is actually competitive (12)

Yes, it's a little unfair that Jason earned two points for this one since I only asked for one surprise, but predicting both Scott Kazmir and the Pirates' success is some witchcraft. Tanya and I are off to sulk about the Mariners now.

6. Who will be the biggest disappointment of the season?

Same deal with the subjectivity as the surprises, but whatever. One point for guessing the disappointment.

Andrew: Dodgers only win the Wild Card (13)
Tanya: Josh Hamilton (15)
Jason: Brewers and Hanley Ramirez (15-point cancels out for HanRam's complete non-disappointment)
Greg: Cubs (17)
Matt F1: Blue Jays (15)
Craig: Dodgers (16)
Mason: Blue Jays (13)

7. Who hits the longest dinger?

According to Hit Tracker Online, the longest homer of the season was hit by the Braves' Evan Gattis on September 8th: 486 feet.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Oof. Yeah, no one thought that the previously anonymous Gattis would hit the longest homer of 2013. (Although Giancarlo Stanton, who was guessed by three staff members, came close with a 463 foot shot in the same vicinity as Gattis's blast.)

8. How many games will the Astros lose?

On September 13th, the hapless Astros stood at 51-96 with 15 games to go in the season. It was a crappy .347 winning percentage, but if they kept it up, then they would finish with 105 losses, a mark actually better than their 2011 and 2012 loss total. (Go go gadget monster rebuild, Jim Crane.) Using the "Price is Right" rules of closest guess to the final number without going over, the winner of this would have been...

Andrew: 108
Tanya: 107
Jason: 101
Greg: 115
Matt F.: 101
Craig: 104
Mason: 101

Craig. However, the Astros decided "Nah" and lost every single game the rest of the way, becoming the first team in MLB history to end a season on a 15-game losing streak. Their final record was 51-111, so I got the point.

Andrew: 108 (14)
Tanya: 107 (15)
Jason: 101 (15)
Greg: 115 (17)
Matt F.: 101 (15)
Craig: 104 (16)
Mason: 101 (13)

Well played, Astros.

So the MLB predictions leader is Greg with 17! Congrats, Greg. I'm sure this won't be rubbed into our faces like Brandon Phillips's ass at all.
