Yankees meet with agents for Beltran, Choo, Ellsbury, Drew, McCann

Rob Carr

The Yankees, led by Hal Steinbrenner, have met with the agents representing Carlos Beltran, Shin-Soo Choo, Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew, and Brian McCann at the general manager meetings. Ellsbury, Choo and Drew are represented by Scott Boras, while Beltran is represented by Dan Lozano and McCann is represented by B.B. Abbott.

Even though the Yankees have already signed Derek Jeter to a new $12 million contract, Steinbrenner has informed Jeter that they plan to sign another shortstop. There appears to be mutual interest between the Yankees and Brendan Ryan, but that might not stop them from going forward on a deal with Stephen Drew.

All these players will require the Yankees to surrender their first round draft pick and Ellsbury, Choo, and McCann could all reach $100 million, while Beltran could require a three to four-year deal.

The bigger question is what is Brian Cashman's job at this point? Steinbrenner was the one who signed Jeter to a new deal and now he's meeting with agents about what they're willing to pay. It doesn't look like Cashman has much say as to what goes on with this team anymore, so it could be an interesting offseason.
