MLB News: Injuries and managerial changes

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

There is plenty of news about other teams dealing with injuries and making managerial changes.

Injuries

Matt Harvey has finally decided to undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow and will miss the Mets' 2014 season. It was likely to happen, but it's still not what you want to see for someone so promising.

Chase Headley has undergone arthroscopic surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee. He will be out four to six weeks coming off his age-29 season where he hit .250/.347/.400 with 13 home runs. Headley is still arbitration eligible and won't be a free agent until 2015.

Free agent Josh Johnson underwent elbow surgery to remove a bone spur in his pitching elbow, but will be ready for spring training. Heading into the offseason at 30, after the worst season of his career, with another injury, it doesn't look good for his future contract.

Mariners top prospect Danny Hultzen was operated on by Dr. Andrews in order to cleanup his labrum and rotator cuff while fixing a capsule tear. Phillies' 2013 second rounder Andrew Knapp has Tommy John surgery. Just proof that the Yankees aren't the only team that have bad luck in the draft.

Managerial Changes

Following their elimination from the playoffs against the Pirates, the Reds have decided to fire Dusty Baker. This ended his six-year stint with the team, going all the way back to 2008. With the Reds back in contention, it's probably time to move away from him.

The Rangers have decided to not renew the contracts of coaches Dave Anderson and Jackie Moore for the 2014 season. The organization feels they need an in-game manager better than bench coach Moore to compliment manager Ron Washington.

The Royals have hired the recently fired ex-Cubs manager Dale Sveum to be their new infield instructor for the 2014 season.

Former Orioles manager Dave Trembley has been hired by the Astros to serve as Bo Porter's bench coach.
