Baseball news from around MLB

There is plenty of baseball news happening right now. Here is the latest:

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers have signed Cuban shortstop Alexander Guerrero to a four-year, $28 million deal. His signing bonus will include $10 million of that money which will be paid to him upon signing.

Matt Kemp underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left ankle. He suffered the injury in July in his first game back from a shoulder injury. He is expected to be healthy in time for spring training.

The Dodgers have fired bench coach Trey Hillman and advance scout Wade Taylor. Both men are close friends to manager Don Mattingly and, though his option for 2014 has vested, it likely won't make him very happy. Mattingly recently spoke publicly about the feeling that he is unwanted in LA, so the front office is likely unhappy with him.

Dodgers trainer Sue Falsone has left the organization to pursue other career opportunities. She had been the Dodgers' head trainer for the last two seasons, the first female to hold such a position in all major professional sports. The team dealt with a lot of injuries in 2013, but it's unknown if her leaving is directly connected to that.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants have signed Tim Lincecum to a two-year, $35 million deal with a full no trade clause to lock him up through the 2015 season. This comes after he rejected another two-year deal from the Giants only days ago. He was said to have been interested in a short term deal, likely hoping he can regain his form and collect a bigger deal in a year or two.

New York Mets

Matt Harvey underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Tuesday and will miss the entire 2014 season.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers have named Tim Bogar as their new bench coach. He was on the Red Sox coaching staff from 2009 to 2012 and the 2008 Rays.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds have hired Bryan Price to a three-year deal to replace the recently fired Dusty Baker. Price had been the Reds pitching coach since 2010 and has worked for the Mariners and Diamondbacks since 2001.

Detroit Tigers

After eight years of managing the Detroit Tigers, Jim Leyland has stepped down as manager of the team. He will look into taking another job within the organization, but he won't be looking to manage again.

Miguel Cabrera will need surgery to repair a torn groin that he had been playing through since September. It is believed that he suffered the tear in on September 21 when he attempted to stretch a single into a double. He is expected to be ready for spring training.

Minnesota Twins

The Twins have hired Hall of Famer Paul Molitor to the 2014 coaching staff. He will be in charge of base-running, bunting, infield instruction and position, and will help with in-game strategy. Molitor has been the organization's minor league base-running and infield coordinator since 2005. He has also served as hitting coach for the 2004 Mariners and was a coach for the Twins for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Twins closer Glen Perkins had arthroscopic surgery in the beginning of the month to repair the medial meniscus in his right knee, but is expected to be ready for spring training.
