Yankees & David Robertson Avoid Arbitration With One-Year Deal

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

David Robertson and the Yankees avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $3.1 million dollars for the setup man and heir apparent to Mariano Rivera. Robertson had been the lone hold out remaining unsigned after filing for $3.55 million, less than a million higher than the club's $2.85 million dollar offer.

Last season was not quite as amazing for D-Rob as his All-Star season in 2011 was, but he is still poised to take over closing duties when the Yankees are finally forced to face life after Mo. D-Rob was briefly given a chance to close in 2012, and it didn't go immediately perfectly, but there's no reason to think he wouldn't be able to succeed in the role long term. He won't be Mariano, but no one is.

Now that all arbitration-eligible players have been signed, Brian Cashman and co. can work on important stuff, like finding a catcher that doesn't suck and maybe someone who actually hits the ball right-handed. Maybe.
