Yankees release Jack Cust, Colin Curtis, and Ray Kruml

Update: Melky Mesa is, in fact, going to AAA. That's it. As Collins pointed out, Curtis & Kruml were on the DL, so only one spot was actually open on the roster. Per Donnie Collins of the SWB Yankees Blog. Curtis (he of mid-at-bat home run fame) and Kruml weren't hitting much of anything at AAA, but Cust hit .240/.400/.475 there with 20 homers. Trenton Thunder beat writer Josh Norris suspects this cut means promotions are soon to come for some AA Yankee prospects. Bummer for that group of veterans in AAA, but promotions come before pennant races in the minor league system after all. My hunches on promotions are, fitting with the "two outfielders and a DH" swap, Jose Pirela (.322/.387/.504), Melky Mesa (.278/.346/.468), and Cody Johnson (.244/.336/.520 with a team-leading 16 HR).
