Trade Sweaty Freddy

Now that we have a stacked rotation and the Immaculate Pettitte returning, I was thinking about what to do with Freddy Garcia. We should trade Freddy to the Oakland A's for Seth Smith. He can serve as our DH against righties and even backup the corner outfielders when needed. He hits righties (career .881 OPS), which is even better than Old Uncle Ibanez (.831 career OPS), Smith is also in his prime (10 years younger than Ibanez) and I believe is still arbitration eligible. Obviously Smith's numbers were bolstered by three years of playing in Coors Field (.296/.366/.559 home vs. .257/.332/.418 away) but I imagine his ability to hit righties is not a mirage. He is also a Pull hitter (195 wRC+) and as a lefty in Yankee Stadium he will hit home runs.

The A's might interested because with the loss of Anderson, Gonzalez and Cahill they need someone that can put in innings and I think Freddy is safe for 120-150 innings (no great, but better than a lot of options). The A's don't even have a full rotation with McCarthy's health still a question, Braden coming off shoulder surgery and a plethora of young pitchers that still may not be ready to take the brunt of innings. Freddy could be a great stopgap for them as they begin another round of rebuilding. His competition would be Bartolo Colon! (who might not be able to return to 2011 form), Jarrod Parker and Brad Peacock so they could definitely use the depth. The Yankees could also easily eat half of Freddy's contract ($2M) and pay for Seth Smith ($2M).

The A's could also afford to give up Seth Smith as he doesn't even look to be a starter in 2012. After going out and getting every outfielder possible, the A's now have the much beloved Coco Crisp, Youtube star Yoennis Cespedes and newly acquire Josh Reddick set as their starting outfield, with Colln Cowgill and Johnny Gomes coming off the bench. Going from Coors to whatever the hell stadium the A's play in now, the A's would be smart to get rid of Smith before his stats take a nosedive and his value deflates.

Another possible trade partner could be the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pujols-less Cardinals have an injured rotation. Adam Wainwright is still coming off Tommy John surgery and now 2011 savior Chris Carpenter has a bulging disk in his back and will be on the DL to start the year. What the Cardinals need is a cheap stopgap while their ace recovers and their #1 prospect Shelby Miller prepares for an MLB call up. Freddy Garcia would be a great presence to have in the rotation to help keep them stable in the early months of the season. The best part of such a trade from the Cardinals point of view, is that we'd only be asking for a bench player in return. I would take either Tyler Greene or Daniel Descalso. Both are very cheap and young and can play SS, 2B and 3B which is painfully needed on a team that thinks Eric "intensive care" Chavez is a viable option off the bench and both can be easily replaced (Freese and Schumaker). While I'd prefer Descalso because he can hit, Greene is more realistic.

If anyone has some other trade ideas concerning Freddy Garcia or whoever, feel free to post them! I really enjoy coming up with hypothetical trade, especially realistic ones so try to keep it to trades that the 2012 Yankees could realistically and fairly make!
