I need a job like this.
He became a free agent at the end of the 2011 season after the Yankees declined his 2012 option and paid him a $250,000 buyout.

I remember reading some story about how he and some other minor leaguers were robbed and almost killed in a hotel room.

by MichaelGGBGrabow on Feb 8, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

I saw his first ML home run in person

It was off Cone in 1999 at the old YS. Whenever he came up to bat, the people around me would make fun of him. “Russell Who?” Haha. Then he crushed a home run, and some people who were sitting nearby — Indians fans, and probably family members, if not members of Branyan’s family, looked at the guys who were making fun of him and said “Russell BRANYAN!” The joke was on them, because the Yankees won in the 9th when Brosius hit a two-run single with the bases loaded.

by long time listener on Feb 8, 2012 1:43 PM EST reply actions

I thought they should've signed Branyon every year for the past 5 years.

his swing’s made for the stadium and he likes to walk a lot, so he fits. Not only wouldn’t I be surprised if he makes the team but I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits 20+HRs as the full time DH.

i'm ok with this

a bench of Jones, Branyan, Nunez and Hall sounds like a pretty strong thing to have. I could see them still signing Ibanez to a MiLB deal and a ST invite to compete, however Branyan does offer the fielding flexibility that the Yankees seem to prefer.

by jetanumba2 on Feb 8, 2012 2:14 PM EST reply actions

I'm OK with it

Why not? On a minor league deal it’s fine. He’s shown lots of power and it’s worth a shot to see if he still has it.

I’d still prefer Damon, so hopefully it doesn’t change their pursuit of him.

The Pirates are interested in Burnett

they’re not on his no trade list. Burnett for McCutchen! do it!

by jetanumba2 on Feb 8, 2012 2:57 PM EST reply actions

Well obviously we wouldn't get back anything good for AJ

However the Pirates are definitely a team that would have nothing to lose by picking up AJ if we paid a good portion of the contract.

Mop depth.

At least he’s not holding a 40-man spot like last year. He’s an organizational guy at this point.

really no point in just releasing him

Chase Whitley and Matt Daley look interesting if we actually had space for them and they can lower their walk rates (Whitley’s jumped astronomically last year). Oh well.

by jetanumba2 on Feb 8, 2012 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

It didn’t jump really astronomically. He actually lowered it from last year to 3.6. He had a 1. 9 BB/9 in Tampa but it rose once he went to Trenton, but that was a small sample size

Yes, that is Mike Marra.
