Wednesday Late Night News Roundup
It has been a while since the 6 a.m. news, so here is what you may have missed in the mean time:
- The biggest news to happen today was the confirmation of playoff expansion for the 2012 season. Ken Rosenthal likes the new format, but I think there were other ways to make winning the division count more without watering down the playoff field. Hey, Selig, how about using some of your need to change things around for good, like expanding replay?
- Quick notes out of the Yankees camp today:
- The Yankees do practice the flip play, Bobby Valentine.
- Austin Romine might not see much Spring Training playing time because of his injured back.
- RHP Dan Burawa, of all people, has impressed Girardi and a few hitters with his pitching.
- Russell Branyan will also miss time because of back issues. We'll have to wait on the DINGERS!
- The Yankees released Cano's cousin, Burt Reynolds, today. Goodnight, sweet prince. We hardly knew ye.
- Mike Napoli intends to see what he can get in free agency this offseason. If he can come close to replicating his 2011, sign me up.
- Former Yankee A.J. Burnett injured his eye while bunting today and is flying back to Pittsburgh to have it examined. Sigh. There are so many reasons that this is absurd.

romine
Russell Martin is bad luck for all our catching prospects. Sanchez; last year suddenly had behavioral problems. Montero; gets traded. Romine; now has back problems. Our plethora of catching talent has disappeared.

The new playoff format was designed to get the Red Sox into the palyoffs. Even their fans hate it.
It’s a transparent attempt to duplicate the last day of last season when a whole bunch of games actually mattered, and played out in exciting fashion. It won’t work, and it’s stupid.
The first wild card team will have at least 90 wins, but could lose in a playoff to a team they throttled during the season if they have to run out their #4 starter against the second team’s ace, or if they just have one bad day. Ridiculous.
I hope AJ Burnett does not become the Pirates’ version of Carl Pavano. The Bucs deserve better than that for taking AJ off our hands.

Saw the AJ bunting footage...
….and couldn’t help buy smile. Not because I wish the guy bad, or because I want him to get hurt.
But the first thing that went through my head was: “Well, at least we’ll all know where THAT black eye came from!”.
Just read...
…it’s an orbital fx…and he’ll need surgery to repair.
THAT’S too bad. Never want to see anyone get seriously injured.
So for AJ.....
Then I guess he will not be their opening day pitcher. How long should it take for him to get back…..?

It depends...
…could take a week or two. Could take a month or two. Depends on how serious the fx was (and if it was a full blowout), and thus, how in depth the surgery was.
He MIGHT be back by opening day…the question is will he have had enough ST to be ready to pitch.
