Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Report: Molina, Hughes, Braun's Pee, Bobby V Opens his Mouth

Imagining his new mansion.

The Post's Joel Sherman likes the way Phil Hughes' fastball looks so far. Of course, we already knew that his heater was nearly unhittable in short bursts, holding a .172 BAA out of the bullpen.

  • Most think Yadier Molina's impending extension with St. Louis (reportedly five years and $75M) will give Russell Martin more bargaining power. ESPN's Andrew Marchand says Martin will receive at least $30M if he reaches free agency (after 2012).

I have worked hard my entire life, have performed my job duties with integrity and professionalism, and have done so with respect to this matter and all other collections in which I have participated.

Forgive my lack of biochemistry knowledge, but I still don't get how leaving a urine sample unattended over a weekend could raise the amount of testosterone in it.

Star-divide

We'll never practice [the flip play]. I think [Jeter] was out of position and the ball gets [Giambi] if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally...

That was amazing that [Jeter] was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it...

[Varitek] was everything you want a guy who wears a 'C' to be... He was a man's man, he was a big hitter when needed, he was the leader of the pitching staff... He was able to beat up Alex, all that stuff. He was exactly what he was supposed to be.

The guy with the mask on was a "man's man"?

Takes a tough guy to fight with a catchers mask on

Tek really did a great job as a Captain holding that locker room together last year. Some are comparing Bobby V to Rex Ryan but I dont recall Rex taking shots at players accomplishments and stuff.

I think Bobby V knows the Sox are going to be cow dung this year so he’s trying to give the fans a little something. I think the guy is douche and hope he is gone by midseason.

I really think Bobby V is just trying to distract from the real issues facing Boston right now

I don’t really think it’s going to work either. If they finish 3rd again, the Boston media will eat him alive!

There is the possibility of them finishing fourth

Toronto is no slouch and if Bobby V doesn’t get this team to play together, it could be a long season in Beantown. Red Sox fans could be calling for Bobby’s head by the All-Star break. Which will have me laughing my ass off for what they did to Francona.

Bobby's stuff works best on a team of underdog players

I dont think he has ever managed a team full of the stars and personalities the Sox have. You can take charge and bark orders when you have Edgardo Alfonzo and Jay Payton, you cant do this with guys like Lackey and Beckett. I thought this was a bad match from the start but Im a fan of the hiring. It keeps Bobby from calling games, so its a win.

The whole world hates the big bad Yankees… why just cus they win alot??? Guess what people… TOUGH FUCKING SHIT!!!!!! Dont like it, then stop em when you play em…. Y’all jealous cus they win more than you do, boo frickin hoo!!! Maybe when your ownership and organization are devoted to winning above everything else, then you will have this kind of success… but til then, have fun in wallowing in your mediocrity and THIRD place….

And you applauding him

isn’t really necessary.

Regardless of one’s reaction, there’s still a little something called class. It’s something that Terry Francona has (I’ve never heard him disparage any player, even his own, when he was the manager of the Red Sox, always taking the blame and defending his players).

Regardless, I don’t think any of the Yankee players (even Jeter and A-Rod) are going to give any thought to this, except to use it as motivation to play even better against the Red Sox this year.

I’m merely informing a fan of another team that to come to the Yankees fan site and applaud someone insulting Yankee players is unnecessary. I didn’t insult him or his opinion, but offered my own.

Fair enough

However, I do find it ironic that his insults being relayed to Yankee fans by other Yankee fans (in this case, the PSA staff writers) simply perpetuates the insults.

It’s one thing for the major sports media to report this stuff (ESPN, SIRUSXM, MLB.com, etc.) but it’s funny that he can really thank bloggers and community sites for pushing it even further into the Yankee fanbase.

On Braun,

it seems he was just exploiting every last legal loophole to get out of suspension. Either way, his name will be tainted with suspicion from now on, especially if his production drops this season.

by Johnny_Blaze on Feb 28, 2012 9:18 PM EST reply actions

he could not be more lucky

Basically his only option was to challenge the integrity of the test. The fact that the transporter was incompetent made his defense easy.

by DukBudr on Feb 28, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Did you read the linked article and the collector's statement?

I don’t think the collector was incompetent, I think MLB and MLBPA need to re-examine the instructions given to collectors if they are unable to “immediately” ship a sample. And by “immediately ship” they don’t mean take to FedEx, they mean take to FedEx early enough for the sample to actually get to Montreal the next day (because even if a FedEx is open until 9pm or 24 hours, like Braun says, there are still a last pickup time for the truck that takes the days packages to the airport or whereever the central distribution center is in that area.

Like Travis, I’m still waiting for some explanation by Braun’s team that can prove scientifically that storing a sample for a few days in cool temperatures makes the testosterone level of the sample go from “normal” to a ratio of 40:1.

Not that I know of

but I wouldn’t necessarily expect him to offer expert insight into anything other than what Braun might have taken that would have produced that testosterone level.

by phonty on Feb 28, 2012 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe he has stored his tainted piss over a weekend, lol

I'm talking from a legal side

I know nothing about the science of urine testing. But the transporter failed to follow protocol, so Braun won his appeal.

by sing_or_die_1818 on Feb 28, 2012 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Yup. Sure thing Joe.
The Yankees’ rotation battle has widely been considered a two-man competition for one final spot, with Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia jockeying to be the fifth starter. But manager Joe Girardi spun that idea on its head Tuesday, saying only two spots in the rotation were guaranteed — CC Sabathia and Hiroki Kuroda — while the other four candidates were competing for the remaining three spots.

this is not a story, just adding fuel to the fire for this “rivalry” and as other users pointed out, to divert attention because everybody knows that his @#$ will be toast by the boston media should his team underachieve.

On leaving the biochemistry...

….question:

Apparently you understand it better than you think you do.

In simplest terms, it can’t. From a biochem/testing perspective, NOTHING the collector reportedly did would have accounted for the results that were seen. Not only could it not have raised the levels, it can’t make natural testosterone morph into synthetic testosterone or make synthetic testosterone grow in the sample. In fact, improperly storing the specimen (in a hot room, in direct sun light or UV light) would have more than likely LOWERED the testosterone and epi levels…and likely caused other issues with the specimen(s) that would have invalidated it when they began testing it.

Really, there are only two options: The specimen was tampered with, somehow, somewhere, someway OR Braun had the substance in his body (knowingly or unknowingly).

The chain of custody issue raises suspicion that it could, possibly, maybe be option one..which is enough to throw out the suspension according to the arbitrator.
