John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman: Is This Their Last Year?

WCBS 880 Radio has been the Yankees radio home for 9 seasons. This season will be their 10th with the club and the last year of their contact to broadcast Yankees baseball over the airwaves. After last season, the broadcast rights were up for grabs and WCBS secured them, but only for a year. The question is now, if WCBS can't obtain rights again to broadcast the Yankees will the interesting announcing duo of John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman be out of jobs and finished broadcasting Yankees baseball? The often-criticized (and a lot of the time for good reason) Sterling, hasn't missed a game in 23 years as Yankees radio play-by-play announcer and his partner Waldman began broadcasting broadcasting with him on the Yankees Radio Network n 2005. Do you think the duo will be back next year? How do feel about their on-air duties?

Sterling's not going anywhere

I could definitely see Waldman being replaced though. At least I hope.

I think Sterling will stay too no matter what company gets the contract but I think Waldman should go. She may have a slight bit of an extreme emotional attachment to the teams (haha).

Even if some new company gets the contract

I could see them hiring Sterling on. Probably not Waldman though.

Rarely listen to games on the radio.

I like hearing the puns on here though.

Keep Sterling

Dump Susyn
Maybe Hire Paul O’Neill, i like his TV work when he’s on. He needs a bigger gig. But he’s prob still under contract with YES

Since everyone and their grandma have a mock draft, i guess i'll do one too
1st Rd: Micheal Floyd, WR Norte Dame, 2nd Rd: Dontari Poe, DT Memphis, 3rd Rd: LaMicheal James, RB Oregon, 4th Rd: Keenan Robinson, LB Texas, 5th Rd: Ryan Miller, G Colorado, 6th Rd: Matt Reynolds, T BYU, 7th Rd: Drake Dunsmore, TE Northwestern

Sterling

I think sterling is fairly bad and misses a lot of calls but I will say he did much better job with Tino in the booth than normally with Susan. And tino added to the broadcast with his knowledge….

CBS doesn't hire the announcers...

The Yankees pick them, and Suzyn clearly has incriminating photos of someone in the Steinbrenner family, as she’s been able to get job after job with the team despite a total lack of baseball knowledge or broadcasting ability.

Sterling’s funny at times, not usually when he means to be, but from a technical standpoint, he’s beyond awful. Sometimes when you get in the car it’s nice to – you know – find out what’s going on in the game, or what the score is, rather than be treated to John Sterling’s rendition of songs from the 1940’s.

It’d be nice if a sports station broadcasted the Yankees rather than CBS. During a rain delay, I’d rather someone come on and talk about the team instead of hearing a newsreel that’s 60% commercials that loops every 15 minutes.

For the so-called greatest franchise in sports, the radio broadcast is really an embarrassment.

Replace both of 'em

I can’t listen to a game with those 2 buffoons announcing the games. Sterling will go 15 minutes without giving the score-even between innings! This is the crown jewel of MLB and these 2 self-aggrandizing clowns is the best the Yankees can do?

If letting Suzyn keep the radio job keeps her off my TV, let her have the job for life

I couldnt stand when she was on YES. Sterling doesnt bother me but I havent listened to him call games in many years. He and Kay are like Mike and the Mad Dog, much better together than apart.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

I remember as a teen

Listening to Sterling and Kay on the radio, and getting my younger brother mad by calling them Michael Sterling and John Kay.
But we both agreed that Sterling made it impossible to mock his announcing. “Constantino Martinez” and “Bern baby, Bern!” are forever etched in my memory.

Replace both of them

Can’t stand either one on their own but their suckiness together is too much to handle. Waldman sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me and Sterling, although he has a great voice, is so narcissistic that i can’t even handle it anymore. Besides his narcissism, he also makes terrible calls. It’s happened plenty of times: I’d be listening to the game while driving and I hear, “It is high, It is far, It is…….caught just before the warning track.” C’mon bro. YOU’RE AT THE GAME!! Get your act together. Oh, my favorite was this: “It is high, It is far, It is…….GONE!!!!……no wait…….it’s off the wall…….no, it got caught. Inning over.” Sterling and Waldman both suck and should’ve been gone years ago

They're so ungodly awful, it's hilarious

I hope they both stay. It’s pretty unreal, though, how into himself Sterling is. What is up with the fake laugh? It’s worse than the HR calls!

He seems like he’s a really miserable person. I read that he pretty much never leaves his apartment when he’s not on the road for games and that he has no friends/social life at all. And he’s single, pretty much always alone… Sad dude.

The two of them

They need to go. Get someone who realizes the program is Yankee Baseball and not the John Sterling Variety Show. In short, John Sterling is even more annoying than Tim McCarver and he lacks McCarver’s credibility. Waldman is even worse.

by Iggy Poptart on Feb 28, 2012 5:24 PM EST reply actions

I liked Charlie Steiner. I liked Michael Kay. I'm thoroughly sick of Sterling and Waldman.

Any act gets old when you hear it for the thousandth time, but the problem with Sterling is that what we hear is his actual act, not a call of a baseball game. When I die and go to hell, the Yankees games will be called by Sterling and Phil Rizzuto, and they will lose every one. Suzyn Waldman lost me with the Sportsgasm, and too much of her color commentary consists of responding to Sterling’s opinions with ’um-hmm."

I’m not advocating for them to be replaced by anyone specifically, and televsion and radio calls are two different animals completely, but the present team must go. Carthage must be destroyed.

Scooter and Team

I grew up with the announcing team of the Scooter, Bill White, and Bobby Murcer. There may have been someone else in there before Bobby came on board. First time I heard the Scooter, I didn’t know why he kept talking about cannolli’s. Those were the days when the team bounced between radio and TV on WPIX.

by NYinNyon on Mar 3, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

At least with Scooter, listening was fun. And, it’s Phil Rizzuto. I understand keeping an all-time Yankee great in the box. I think Murcer and others really enjoyed working with him, and that came through in the broadcasts.

I don’t understand the Sterling/Waldman thing at all. Bad announcers that aren’t former players. And if having a female announcer in the box is important, I have to believe there are zillions of players’ wives or actual sports reporters that are better. A former US softball player maybe? Come on Yankees.
