New York Yankees News and Notes
Good morning, Pinstripe Alley readers. Here's your usual morning news for Wednesday, February 22nd. Spring Training is in full swing for pitchers and catchers, and the team's first full workout is in just three days.
- At River Ave. Blues, Joe Pawlikowski discussed the Yankees' roster flexibility going forward. Platoon-able players have enabled the Yankees to take advantage of their available bench spots.
- Over at FanGraphs, Mike Axisa wrote about the upcoming free agent market and thinks the Yankees should extend Russell Martin now in order to avoid high-priced free agent deals. In conclusion, Axisa states: "Martin might not hit like Napoli or defend like Yadi, but he's a valuable player in his own right and keeping him off the market should be an item on the Yankees' agenda over the next nine months."
- At ESPN, Mike Mazzeo collected a variety of A.J. Burnett quotes.
- Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus discussed the Yankees' top five prospects (without a subscription, you can still read about Manny Banuelos and Gary Sanchez).
- David Waldstein of The New York Times said there is a mix of denial and disbelief surrounding the Yankees' bullpen due to Mariano Rivera's apparent impending retirement.

Axisa should really, really shut the fuck up and start writing about the Mets. The Yankees should’ve cut Russel Martin last June, now this dork is talking about resigning him long term? I’m starting to turn green for chrissakes…

2013 free catchers:
Mike Napoli
Yadier Molina
Miguel Montero
Ryan Doumit

Sign Molina AND Napoli! That would be amazing.
I don’t see Napoli continuing what he did last year. That just seemed like a fluke year for him, and you chart seems to support that after two straight declining years.
I’m fine with Martin for another year because the Yankees don’t really have anyone else to take over that role, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a free agent that’s going to be a vast improvement.
oh its definitely possible
but even Napoli’s declining years have been better than Martin. The Angels felt Napoli was a terrible catcher and he looked just fine in Texas. My point is that Martin won’t be the best option we have, he’s just the guy we already know.
I'd rather let Jesus Montero take over the position

The team just needs to convince Seattle
That Romine’s defense is so ridiculously good that it’d be more valuable than anything Jesus brings…
