MLB Hot Stove Report: Raul Ibanez is heading to the Big Apple
Mood Music - Could You Bite The Hand? by Steve Conte
In happy.....sad.....acceptable....Yankees news today, as expected the Bombers have signed OF and long stretched out chantable first name guy Raul Ibanez to be our DH and star with Andruw Jones in the new remake of "Platoon." This deal was expected as soon as the A.J. Burnett trade to the Pirates was approved. Speaking of which, here's a photo of A.J. in a Pirates uniform. Call me crazy, but I think he looks better as a Pirate cause of the tattoos. I wonder if that makes me a Pirate-cist?
With that deal out of the way, Jon "Please don't retweet his tweets if PSA writer williamnyy follows you" Heyman tweets that the Yankees have moved on to talks with Eric Chavez, tweeting that the deal would be a major league deal. Funny how that phrase can have two meanings. Regardless, the predicted outcomes of the A.J. Burnett trade seem to all be coming true. I wish one of those predictions was that PSA writer I'mGivingYouARaise would make more money!
Many tweets are coming in that New York Yankees closer and ultimate bullpen dream come true Mariano Rivera has given many hints that this will indeed be his last year in Pinstripes. However, there has been nothing officially stated yet by Mo himself, only that "I know now, but I don't have to tell you!" which could really mean anything. Until he officially announces his retirement, anything said on the matter is just pure speculation. I personally choose to believe that it means he's sticking with his original plan to pitch till he's 50 years old.
LoHud Yankees tweets that Joe Girardi has no plans to change his current bullpen setup formula, and that Soriano will pitch the 7th, D-Rob will pitch the 8th, and Chad Gaudin (C-Gaud) will pitch the 9th. Wait, no. I meant Mo. I don't even think the Binder, forged in the fires of Mt. Doom, would allow such an evil. LoHud also tweets that Girardi fully expects Cervelli to be the backup catcher. Romine is going to have to seriously impress them in Spring Training in order to beat out Cervelli for the job.
Finally, LoHud is reporting that new Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda made a strong first impression on his first day. First impressions are always important, although probably more on dates than workouts and Spring Training. Still, these are definitely the types of thing you like to hear about a new pitcher coming into the fold, so perhaps we can think that Pineda wants to date us. If that's the case, he should bring me chocolate in addition to a third pitch!
Non-Yankee Hot Stove reports after the jump...
The Oakland Athletics decided to "Manny Up" and sign Manny Ramirez to a minor-league deal. Manny still has to serve a 50-game suspension, as well as possibly serve the A's fans curly fries in the Overstock.com Coliseum. Okay, I made that last part up, but I think that'd be kinda cool if he had to do that.
The Phillies have agreed to a two year deal with right hander Kyle Kendrick. Look out, NL East! Seriously though, that is going to be an interesting division to watch this season.
Finally, a photo of Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder with their new respective club uniforms on. The AL just got a whole lot more dingers!
Also, in a bit of shameless self promotion, don't forget to listen to the all new, always exciting, fresh for 2012 Pinstripe Alley Podcast! It's delicious!

William tweeted over the weekend that he wanted to know if there was a way to get people he follows to not retweet anything Heyman writes.

Sounds like Mo has made a decision but he's still on the fence about it, and wants to reserve the right to change his mind

Not surprising
Like Yogi said, baseball is 90% mental. The other half is physical. I always thought the biggest part of AJ’s problem was that he couldn’t cope with the stress of pitching in New York. I’m sure he’ll do much better in Pittsburgh.0

My problem with his comments
is that he sounds like he’s blaming everybody but himself. Like people started f*cking with his mechanics and that’s what messed him up.
Romine!
It doesn’t bother me. What is he supposed to say to inspire PIT fans?? … “My velocity has continued to drop. I’ve been terrible in NY for the past two years. Coming to the NL Central with no DH should make my numbers look better.”

How about
“Maybe a fresh start will do me good. I enjoyed my time in NY but somehow lost my way. I’m looking forward to helping Pittsburgh get back to its winning tradition.”
Romine!
winning tradition
They haven’t finished above .500 since 1992. That would be complete bullshit.

No, just the understatement of the century
They have won 5 WS and 9 pennants. Considering that some clubs haven’t won any of either, the Pirates come out ahead a bit. Granted, their last WS was 1979, but…
Perhaps AJ will help them at least get over .500 in the next 2 years.
Haha that would be great if someone actually said that.
Respect. Maybe not from where he’s going though.

I'm excited to see Pineda throw gas
Literally gas. Flammable liquid being heaved at a batter at 96 mph. Totally worth the price of a ticket.

Very sad about Ibanez. He brings more power, but he is not, at this point, a good hitter. .256/.307/.440 against RHP leaves a lot to be desired.
Against RHP in 2011, he hit line drives at a 20.4% clip and had a .184 ISO, but had just a .270 BABIP (a .031 drop from 2010), which leads me to believe he was pretty unlucky.

Never denied that, I just think he’ll provide great value and good upside considering he signed for a $1.1M base salary. He could suck for all I know, but that doesn’t matter. You just cut him if he sucks.
I just think he’s a very good candidate to give the Yanks above average production against righties (and the Yankees obviously think so as well), especially after taking a look at his numbers on multiple occasions.

He’s even cheaper, for one, but I think his swing is tailor made for the Stadium. Basically, I think Ibanez is just done. He’s almost forty years old.
Romine!
Branyan is no spring chicken, and I have detailed that Ibanez did hit the ball with some authority last season. Why do you think he’s done?
I also think something to consider is that the Yankees were comfortable with giving Ibanez a ML deal, and stuck with a Minor League deal for Branyan.

Im wondering why you love Ibanez so much
If this guy had anything left, why does it seem that no other team was even remotely interested in him? I mean, I havent seen a single team linked to him other than the Yanks. I hope you and the Yanks are right and the rest of the world is wrong but this seems like a waste of a roster spot in my opinion.
Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.
he's a $1m lottery ticket
i.e. a cheap gamble – in Yankee land anyway.
The Yanks think they needed a cheap platoon guy to DH against righties. Didn’t have money to sign a big name. didn’t want to anyway with Jeter, ARod etc needing DH days off. The other options were equally questionable. Who else do you want in the 25th spot? IF Ibanez replicates numbers from the last few years, or even close, then $1.1m is fine. If he performs to earn the extra cash, fine. If he sucks, you cut him.
You can argue that you prefer Damon or Branyon or Matsui, or Manny or whoever, but it’s a sensible signing.
He might even hit 20 homers and make Cashman look super ninja. Who knows??
Research is what I'm doing when I don't know what I'm doing.
Anything can happen but its less likely the older you get.....and this guy is old
I dont see the value in wasting the money or roster spot on a guy this old who stinks in the field and is only likely to get 10 ABs a week at best anyway. I would have preferred just about anybody else in this spot.

I don’t love him. At all, actually. It’s really more about me being confused why everyone hates the signing so much, even though he was basically the best remaining option left on the open market.
Limey hit the nail on the head. He’s a cheap gamble and was the best option left.

Just felt there was little need
Why waste the money on a guy that will get 10 ABs a week and cant play defense? I really think its a waste of a roster spot.

Ibanez - luck vs. declining skill
Fangraphs has a downloadable spreadsheet to calculate xBABIP, or expected BABIP based on the batted ball profile of a player – how many line drives, flyballs, groundballs. More info here: http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/xbabip-spreadsheet/
Raul came out at .302 xBABIP, much higher than his actual .268 BABIP, and in line with his career .302 BABIP.
However, last year he set career highs in O-Swing%, or the percent of pitches outside the strike zone that he swung at, at 31%, 3.4% higher than his average since 2007, when this data first was collected. He also swung at 2.9% more pitches inside the zone than his average since 2007. In all, he swung at 3% more pitches than his average over the last 5 years. Now, this could be good, but only if his contact rates remained the same. Unfortunately, while his contact inside the strikezone remained similar, his contact rate outside the strikezone dropped 5.3% from his five year average, and 12.2% from his 2008 numbers. This number has been trending downward since 2008, and has resulted in less pitches being thrown to him inside the zone, a 1.7% decrease from 2010 to 2011.
What does this all mean? According to his batted ball profile, he had an unlucky BABIP last year, by about 34 points. However, at the same time, how he is creating this profile has changed. He is chasing many more pitches outside the strikezone, thile his contact rate on those pitches has dropped leading to an increase in the number of pitches he sees outside the strikezone. So, if pitchers continue to make him chase, and his contact rates continue to decline, he could be very bad next year, much worse than his unlucky BABIP in 2011 would lead you to believe.

All of this (except for the unlucky BABIP part). I don’t think the BABIP is so much bad luck as it is a clear indication that his bat speed has completely fallen off a cliff.
This, this and this screams “can’t catch up to much of anything, so swing early and rollover on everything”.
Also, lol whiff %. Just all sorts of awful.
The general attitude of the preceding comment is frowned upon by upper management.
