Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Report: Pineda Arrives
Always good to see the new guy arrive in camp early. Michael Pineda threw a bullpen session today and said he wants to learn from CC Sabathia and that he needs to work on his changeup.
- A.J. Burnett to the Pirates is still being reported as "close." A trade that would've brought back Travis Hafner from the Indians was discussed, but is no longer available. Cleveland is still reportedly interested, as is Anaheim.
- The more I hear about Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, the more I support the Yankees signing him. He's supposedly just 19 years old, and has true five-tool potential.
- Seedlings to Stars profiled the Yankees' farm system.
- Injury/medical expert Will Carroll speculated on which "injured aces" would return with strong seasons. (It could help you in your fantasy league.)
- The Rays extended the contract of manager Joe Maddon through the 2015 season.
- A couple players avoided arbitration today: CF Adam Jones will receive $6.2M from the Orioles in 2012; RHP Casey Janssen will receive $5.9M for the next two years from the Blue Jays.

We’ve reached the It’s-Not-Pretty-Watching-Sausage-Being-Made stage of the A.J. Burnett/Pirates talks. Resolution preferred.

I’m trying to get there. It may take a Spring Training start or two for it to fully sink in that he plays for us and it’s ok to like him.

I used to tune in to Tacoma Rainiers games when he pitched in Triple-A. You may already be at a comfortable level of love for him. What I have, is a sickness.

Well, I can definitely relate to that. Mine, however, now plays for another team so that yours can play for us. Full circle.

What are your predictions for Michael Pineda in 2012?
I predict his season numbers will look like this.
3.65 ERA
1.09 WHIP
15-6 record
180 innings pitched
185 strikeouts

I'm thinking 17-10
3.51 ERA, 190 innings, 210-220 strikeouts, and a 1.15 Whip.
I’m optimistic on the strikeouts. I truly believe he has electric stuff and that it’ll only improve. Couple that with the fact that he’ll be facing hitters who haven’t seen him all that much more often and I think he’s going to get a lot of punchouts in 2012.

I hope he develops his change up and learns the cutter from Mo.

I’m looking forward to seeing that unleashed against the AL East. Pineda seriously looks like he wants to kill someone….I love it
After that "session"...
…he was asked about how his fastball was.
He said something like: Right now? It’s about 65mph.
Nice to see the kid has a sense of humor.
