The Price Is Wrong: Why The New York Yankees Are Not The Perfect Fit For Matt Garza
Yes, the title is a reference to Happy Gilmore, though I could not finish the quote, of course.
Recently I discussed the possibility of a Yankees trade for Matt Garza with Bleed Cubbie Blue, the SB Nation Cubs Blog.
The Cubs are semi-rebuilding, right now, so Garza is available--for a high price.
While the folks over at Bleed Cubbie Blue did not seem to agree on a possible trade offer, there seemed to be one sentiment. The Cubs should not trade Garza to the Yankees unless the trade is an obvious Cubs win.
With the likes of Jacob Turner, Gaby Sanchez, (not likely anymore) and Kyle Drabek being discussed for Garza, the Yankees would likely need to offer at least Manny Banuelos of their top three prospects (Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances), if not more.
In fact, in the poll at Bleed Cubbie Blue, the majority opinion was that the Yankees need to give up Jesus Montero to get Matt Garza. While I do not believe Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer voted in that poll, it shows that the Cubs and their fans value Matt Garza quite highly.
To put it simply, I would be shocked if the Yankees give up Jesus Montero, their best prospect in a long time, for Matt Garza. Anyway, why would the Cubs want Montero if he supposedly can not play catcher? For first base? With the lack of a DH in the NL, in addition to the Cubs already having Geovany Soto entrenched at the catcher position, Montero and the Cubs are not a fit.
Follow me after the jump for more.
Frank provided some insight in the comments of a separate thread as to why Garza is not worth dealing Montero.Garza isn’t good enough to warrant that type of price tag. And since he’s a Super Two, he’s making more money than the average player with two years of team control left would normally make.
Dave Cameron just discussed his trade value, and it’s not worth Montero alone, so asking for Montero and Banuelos or Betances is nonsense.
Also, Garza isn’t great. Fangraphs has him worth 12.6 WAR over the last four years (3.2 WAR per year), and Baseball Reference has him at 11.9 over the last four (~3 WAR per year).
His ERA+ is pretty average for his career at 109, and his career FIP is about 4.00. Garza is a fine starter, but he’s not good enough or under team control long enough to demand top prospects.
To add to that, better options should become available at the Trade Deadline, by which time we will know if the Yankees need a pitcher, or if Phil Hughes/A.J. Burnett/random rotation stater man filled the openings.
Unless the price drops, it seems like the Yankees are not the perfect fit for Matt Garza.

I’d rather just throw ‘random starter’ out on the mound then acquire Maholm; he doesn’t miss bats, and his velocity has gone from 89.4 to 88.3 to 87.4 the last 3 seasons.

I wonder what the asking price for Colby Lewis would be?
Warren and Mesa? More? The Rangers have a surplus of SP, and Lewis is their most expensive. It could help free up some $ for Prince Fielder for them. Colby isn’t great, but he would be a good mid-rotation guy.
I like Lewis
Seems like the kind of gutty innings eater that would be a solid 3 or great 4. Only problem is we need a #2, which I don’t believe he is

Garza is a good pitcher
but know way in hell is he someone you gut your farm for. Ugh, I know prospects are inherently fungible but I would rather gamble and lose in the short term, than see them stuck in a constant loop of getting robbed blind in Cash/ Prospects for the foreseeable future
Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Matt Garza?
One of those three names does not belong and it has to do with Jesus Montero not being offered in a trade for one of them.

I wouldn’t trade Montero for anybody but a sure fire #1. If you have to deliver him and one of the killer Bs for Garza….well, thanks but no thanks

Yeah, basically Garza is a slightly above average pitcher making more money than players with two years of control normally make.
The Cubs seem to value him as a great pitcher that isn’t making a lot of money, and that’s just not the case. They will not get multiple top prospects for him (maybe one) with guys like Oswalt and Kuroda on the open market, and if they do, the acquiring team is making a very questionable deal.

Totally agree, Frank!!
Sign Oswalt to 1 or 2 years, keep Montero, ManBan and Detances and let’s see where those guys are in 2014. The ONLY 2 guys I would trade Montero for are Felix Hernandez or Clayton Kershaw, young guys who are legitimate aces. Those guys would be worth Montero and ManBan or Detances.
Just for questioning sake, why don’t you think his improved season is going to be a trend rather than a fluke?

It’s not only about his numbers. Garza doesn’t make sense for a multitude of reasons, as I indicated in my quotes from your article.
Anyway, I’d say it’s likely to be a trend if he stays in Chicago, but not if he returns to the AL East. The Cubs have a guy with a 3.32 ERA and a 2.95 FIP. The Yankees are probably getting someone more like the 3.95 ERA, 4.25 FIP Garza of the past. 2011 was really the first season he had strong truly strong peripherals.
Basically, I see a guy who never had a FIP below 4 while pitching in the AL East, and then a guy with a sub-3.00 FIP in the NL Central. And even worse, his worst year in the AL East was his last year there, so was the division/league beginning to catch up to him?
The other issue is that he makes a decent chunk of change for an arbitration pitcher, and he’s only under team control for two seasons. Meanwhile, the Cubs wouldn’t give the Yankees any money in the deal, and they’re expecting top prospects in return. Basically, it boils down to the fact that Garza isn’t exceptional, he isn’t cheap, and he isn’t under team control for a long time. He’s a slightly above average pitcher getting paid more than most pitchers like him.
I can get free agent starters with his upside, or better, for only money.

It makes zero sense to give up prospects for a guy that is equivalent to what’s in free agency. It isn’t rocket science. If those free agents didn’t exist I’d consider giving up Betances for him, but nothing more. HOWEVER, those free agents do exist which makes dealing any prospects at all for him(and I mean anything with any value literally) the completely wrong thing to do. I don’t care if they ask for Bichette and Romine. What’s the point? Go sign Kuroda, Jackson, or Oswalt and keep every prospect you can. Never give up more than you have to.

There’s no definitive right answer here. I could just as easily argue in favor of your side. By defining the strong relationship between marketing and econ, I’m pointing out that I think we are more in agreement than disagreement. In the philosophical spectrum, marketing and econ overlap a lot.

I think econ is part of the fundamental basis for the value of marketing, while nature drives economics. In other words, marketing requires econ, but econ stands on it’s own.

But it took one or a few cavemen to come up with that idea and that idea was shown to the other cavemen (I.E. Marketed) to follow along with that philosophy for survival purposes.
Life is based on two basic philosophies, survival & reproduction. Almost every species on the planet uses marketing to survive easier and find someone to breed with.

It adds no further incentive to win the division because #1. Teams should and are trying for that anyway. #2. It almost guarantees the same teams will be in each and every year, especially in the AL East.
Before the Wild Card, teams had a much much greater incentive to win their division, because if they didn’t it meant that they didn’t make it in. Last year with the Red Sox/Braves collapse was probably the most exciting end of the year due to the Wild Card and so there will soon be almost zero chance of that every happening again.

By the way....
…if it were up to me, baseball would go back to 4 divisions and 4 playoff teams, but the game would lose money.
More money leads to expansion of the talent pool, so there are pros and cons. I prefer weighting the regular season more, but kids nowadays don’t have the attention span to appreciate 163 games. They like 1, 5 and 7 game series’ for all the marbles.

I disagree
I think if done correctly, the game and certain teams would actually gain money. If you have 4 divisions, then you have more chances for naturally developed division rivals and not just the force fed bullshit type of rivalry Selig is trying to do by moving the Astros to the AL West to play against the Rangers for the same amount of games we play the Red Sox. Naturally developed divisional rivalries add to greater attendance during the year for those specific teams which eventually, and sadly, adds to ticket price costs.
It would add greater incentive to win divisions and would quite possibly make September baseball a hell of a lot more exciting than knowing that your team will be in the playoffs in August.

This topic is too broad for a comments section. I’ll just say this. (and I’ll use smaller words so as not to piss people off.)
Even though the world is having money problems, baseball is making more money and there are more people playing the game than ever before. There are pros to this.
We take this for granted because we love the sport, but Selig deserves some credit. Lots of people were angry when blacks were brought into the game, and their reasons made just as much sense to them as your reasons do to you.
I’m guessing you’re a bit older based on your view. If not, you’re a bit of an oddball. A lot of our preferences are based on conditioning.
With apologies to Hasan Paliwala, the game is evolving based on fan preference, and we vote with our money and eyeballs.

Fantastic.
Except your whole post has absolutely nothing to do with the original point…
The sport was a joke back then compared to what it is today.
I never said the sport wasn’t making money, because it definitely is. Believe me, I know. I work for MLB.com, so the better the sport monetarily does the better my job is. But, being able to watch every single game like my job requires me to do I can still tell you that the sport is a joke today, whether it makes money or not. That’s because the sport is solely designed for the sole, sole purpose of making money. That can clearly be seen by looking at how the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry is exploited for every dollar it’s worth, because they know they’ll get it. It’s great for me cause I’ll continued to get paid. It doesn’t make the sport any less of a joke.
It’s no different than the Transformers movies. They make a lot of money, but they’re still a fucking joke compared to so many other movies that do not make as much money. The same can be said of baseball and what is continuing to happen to try and make more money. The Yankees & Mets now play each other 6 games a year when before that it was 3, or not at all. Further expanding the Wild Card system has nothing to do with making the game more fair & balanced and has everything to do with making more money. As long as Selig is in charge, baseball will continue along this “Transformers” path of less substance & more monetary value. If you think something making more money makes something better, more power to your economic view of life, but that’s absolutely absurd.
My preference has to do with the conditioning of wanting challenges to be fair for everyone. I do not agree with the Marvel vs. Capcom 2 God Tier philosophy that makes playing other characters outside of this God Tier pointless. As it stands right now, baseball scheduling is unfair and a money making joke. If wanting the game to be more fair & balanced for every team makes me an oddball, then get Tom Jones to sing a Bond-esque theme song about me then with that as the title!

I wouldn't say "a joke"
I think there are higher quality players now since the league is integrated, but there were also smaller rosters and 6 fewer teams in the AL, meaning Gehrig never got to face the tons more crappy pitchers allowed by larger rosters and larger leagues.
There’s a give and take to different eras, so I would hesitate before making such a sweeping statement suggesting that McGriff would have done as Gehrig did (not even going into the fact that among several things, Gehrig’s batting eye was way better anyway)
"Don't you think it's strange that you'll make more money than President Hoover this year?"
"Why not? I had a better year than he did." - G.H. Ruth
I think.
The pool of players has grown by much more than the size of the league. In other words, the expansion of the game has outpaced the growth of the league exponentially, more than making up for the extra roster spots.
This debate has been played out quite thoroughly. Just making the point that those stats are grossly inflated.
Drugs and all, I doubt he was half the hitter Palmeiro was.
Most arguments are really about context.
by SheaWasBettor21 on Jan 6, 2012 12:05 AM EST up reply actions
Maybe, but you can’t ignore those other big factors previously mentioned. Lou Gehrig never got to feast on the Sergio Mitres of the world that most players usually get at least one PA against every game.
And again, just like McGriff, Gehrig’s batting eye was way better than Palmeiro’s, in an era where the strike zone was much bigger. That stuff is comparable, so I also highly doubt that Gehrig “was half the hitter Palmeiro was.”
"Don't you think it's strange that you'll make more money than President Hoover this year?"
"Why not? I had a better year than he did." - G.H. Ruth
You just llike coming on here to start arguments
you’re nothing more than a freakin Mets troll. No baseball fan with even a SHRED of credence would say Lou Gehrig is half the hitter of Rafael “I Never Took Steroids” Palmeiro. Anything you have ever said that was SOMEWHAT intelligent here was instantly swept away by the stupidity of that statement.
With all due respect....

Not a fan.
By the way, can you guys change the video highlights back to when it would play all of the highlights of a single player if you did a search?
For example, if I want to see highlights of David Wright, I have to search for Wright, select a highlight, and then go back to the search page to select another Wright highlight. In the original version, it would just continue to show Wright highlights in order.
Was this change made to generate more “hits”? Can’t you just count it as a unique hit when it goes from one Wright highlight to another?

Please do.
In all seriousness, it’s super annoying. The way it is now, if I don’t click back, I start with watching Felix Hernandez and end up watching Jamie Moyer.
If a fan is willing to get all the way to filtering highlights, s/he should be rewarded with an orgy of media highlighting the specified player, with as little effort as possible.
My eyeballs are too valuable to have to click back every 40 seconds.
Most arguments are really about context.
