Discussion: Ranking The New York Yankees
Sorry for the lack of posts today, but here is something to fill your Yankees void of the day.
Over at Blueshirt Banter we often have discussions about different Ranger related topics. Since there isn't much going on in Yankeeland right now, let's talk about history.
How would you rank the best Yankees of all-time? How would you rank positions in order of importance? How would you rank the best Yankees teams of all-time? Rotations?
Discuss that, and we will be back with more content soon!
Also, here are some questions of the day for you.
-Scale of 1-10, one being least confident, how confident are you in Phil Hughes?
-Who will have a breakout season in 2012?
-Who will have a breakdown season?
-What do you think of Joe Torre leaving his role with the MLB to pursue the possibility of owning the Los Angeles Dodgers? Who should replace Torre? Hearing Tony LaRussa could be an option.

Questions (some of them anyway)
Depends on what confidence means in this case. If it’s just confidence that they’ll improve based on last year, then I’m absolutely confident in both. If it’s confidence in them improving dramatically and being big pieces to the rotation, I’ll say this.
Phil Hughes- 7
AJ Burnett- 9 (and I don’t give a shit)
I’ll say Montero has a breakout season, and as for breakdown, I’m going optimistically and I’m gonna say nobody.
As for Joe Torre, I honestly am not all that interested in whatever he’s doing. If he buys the Dodgers, great. If not, I’m not going to care much. I think LaRussa would be a good option to replace him though.
Best Yankees of all time? I really don’t know. Maybe something like this, off the top of my head.
1. Babe Ruth
2. Lou Gehrig
3. Joe DiMaggio
4. Mickey Mantle
5. Yogi Berra
6. Whitey Ford
7. Derek Jeter
8. Mariano Rivera
As for the last two, I have no opinion really. There could be a lot of options to put there, from Munson to Mattingly to Bill Dickey to A-Rod.
I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.- Kobe Bryant
A.J. Burnett's only fan!
I watched a DVD of the 2009 season (great DVD by the way, a suggested watch, I think it’s made by A&E) and they had highlights of the press conference for CC and A.J.
A.J. kept talking about how he wanted to pitch on a big stage and contribute to multiple WS etc etc and he seemed so…comfortable.Trying not to sound like a therapist here, but maybe all he needs is to watch that video and remind himself!

"Every day is a great day for hockey."
I think he has done that
I remember reading that he watched tapes of his World Series game in 2009 before pitching during the playoffs last year. He pitched pretty well in the playoffs too, but we’ll never know how much he was inspired or how much watching tapes of that game helped him.
He just needs to attack hitters and get ahead as often as possible, because he doesn’t throw 96 consistently enough to blow it by hitters if he’s behind anymore.

Then what the hell are the Cubs in?

'96 was more of a drought than '09 was
That ’96 Series is one of my all-time favorites. Especially after losing the first 2 games at home and all the Atlanta fans predicting a sweep. I love re-watching games 3-6….
I'd say '96
over ‘09 if you’re going to call it the end of the drought. Additionally, it was the beginning of a dynasty. Come to think of it, definitely ’96.
Romine!
The other questions?
Phil Hughes – I’m at 8
AJ – I’m at 7
Breakout season – Jesus Montero
Breakdown season – Russel Martin

Scale of 1-10, one being least confident, how confident are you in Phil Hughes? 7
-A.J. Burnett? 2
-Who will have a breakout season in 2012? Ivan Nova, in the sense that people will quit thinking he is getting lucky and is only a 4 at best. After this season I think that he will look like an average #2 starter.
-Who will have a breakdown season? Freddy Garcia. I just don’t see him being successful again.
Yes, that is Spike Lee.

why in the hell would the Braves want AJ?
they need to start cutting down on the pitchers they have, not shit laterally. They can’t keep four major league ready pitchers in AAA again.

LOL @ Wille.
I love the guy, but you can’t put Willie in front of guys like Mattingly, Elston Howard, Bernie Williams, Phil Rizzuto, Allie Reynolds, Reggie and Paul O’Neill.
fWAR with the Yankees:
Randolph: 56.2
Williams: 47.5
Rizzuto: 47.2
Mattingly: 45.8
Howard: 39.0
O’Neill: 28.4
Jackson: 19.6

its like saying Ricky Henderson was one of the greatest Yankees ever
If he didn’t hit those home runs would he even matter to anyone at this point?
Willie Randolph is ridiculously underrated. I came very close to putting him in my top 10.
"Don't you think it's strange that you'll make more money than President Hoover this year?"
"Why not? I had a better year than he did." - G.H. Ruth
He would have been in my top 15
and until Cano gets a few more years under his belt is probably the best 2b the Yanks have had.
I can, and I did :)
Willie is historically underrated, and the best second baseman the Yanks have ever had (followed by some order of Lazzeri, Cano, Gordon). Willie should be in the Hall of Fame. It was a toss up between him and Rizutto, but Willie gets the nod because he was more valuable for the Yankees and because he needs the recognition.

If Lefty Grove did play for the Yankees
he’s be near the top.

If I put AJ Burnett for a breakdown season, as in 'breaking down and needing surgery,' then he becomes a 10.
Was that the question? Otherwise, he’s going to be more of the same. Anyone who thinks otherwise has been forgetting to take their medication. I believe that Phil Hughes will contribute somehow, either as a starter or as set up for Rivera this year or Robertson next.
Since nobody else has addressed this, the best Yankee rotations were probably those of the 1950s, headed by Whitey Ford, with Reynolds, Raschi, etc backing him up. The second best would probably be the late 90s rotation with Key, Cone, and Wells. Third perhaps the mid- 70s rotation with Guidry, Figueroa, Hunter.
