Yankees/MLB Hot Stove Report: Jim Hendry's Hiring, Mark Teixeira Will Bunt & Jose Campos' Ranking
The Yankees hired former Cubs GM Jim Hendry as a "special assignment scout." It's a good hire. Cashman likes to hire former GMs and Hendry has a lot of experience.
- Mark Teixeira said he will lay down more bunts this year to combat the shift that most teams employ against him.
- Baseball America updated their prospect rankings to include some recent trades. 19-year-old RHP Jose Campos, who came over in the Pineda-Montero trade, dropped into the No. 5 spot behind Gary Sanchez and ahead of Dante Bichette, Jr.
- Before broaching the aforementioned trade, the Mariners requested 3B Brett Lawrie from the Blue Jays for Michael Pineda. Toronto obviously rejected the offer, and then Seattle turned to the Yanks...
- Andrew Marchand (via an unnamed GM) lists the reasons for A.J. Burnett's untradeability.
- A really in-depth (and interesting) article detailing a single pitch Freddy Garcia threw last year.
- Check out an interview with CF prospect Mason Williams (who was profiled here yesterday).
- An O'malley may once again own the Dodgers, but with help from South Korean investors. Peter (son of the famous Walter), was president and/or owner of the Dodgers from 1970-1998. He's one of eight prospective owners currently in the running to buy the L.A. club.

If they can somehow figure out
how to not f$%k up there blue chip prospects (seriously though they’ve had a ton of great prospects over the past 3 years that are literally broken the second they reach the MLB)
they could be good
Can't imagine a team would ever trade prospects worth anything for an executive.
Wait, the Cubs are doing what?
marketing scheme
Most arguments are really about context.

I don't see what the Yankees see in Hendry
He was one of the worst gm’s in history, how is he going to help the front office make any decisions? Tell them when to spend astronomically on big name players?
even bad GM's typically make great assistants.
They must have done something right to get the job in the first place. Like NewYork said, he could really help with scouting.

Hendry will be an invaluable consultant
Just do the opposite of everything he suggests.

Tex bunting
I’ve been calling for that for the past two years. It’s ridiculous that the shift even works, because a mediocre bunt is an easy single.
I know where I come from, and when you always have in mind where you come from the rest will be easy. I think the rest will be easy.

I could trade AJ Burnett
It will cost the Yanks 2mil but by the end of this month I would have AJ Burnett traded with the Yanks eating less than 10mil.

I would love to see how that works.
And what they get in exchange!
Teixeira bunting to counter-act the shift?
How bout you try hitting the ball opposite field for once? i’m not gonna try to sit here and say that that’s easy to do, but it’s something he should’ve been trying to do more often for a while now. There’s a reason why the shift exists: Because some people dont hit opposite field when they sometimes should. Also, it’s not like Tex is fast by any means (he’s like a pig with a broken leg) so it’s not like he’s really gonna beat them out that often (especially now that he’s made his new approach well known) Although it’s not easy, it’d be much wiser (and better for his career in the long run) if he just works on hitting the ball opposite field more often. Here’s to hoping that he does that exact thing a lot easier than I would think conceivable

All the hitter has to do is adjust the timing of his swing. It’s actually not that difficult. He pretty much just has to lazily lay the bat in the zone and let the power of the pitch do all the work.
