New York Yankees News: Nakajima, Jackson, Garza & Joba
The Yankees and Japanese shortstop, Hiroyuki Nakajima, are "still talking" about a contract. Friday is the deadline; if no deal is reached by then, the Yanks would receive their $2.5M posting fee back and Nakajima would return to Japan.
- Edwin Jackson is a free agent (and Scott Boras client), but he's looking for five years at $12M/season. That might be too rich for Hal Steinbrenner's blood.
- Matt Garza is another name being thrown about, especially in the AL East. The Yanks like both pitchers, but the prices (in money or prospects) may be too high to persuade them from pulling the trigger.
- Joba Chamberlain's been throwing off flat ground while rehabbing from multiple surgeries (including Tommy John). Look for his return around the All-Star break.
- LoHud catches up on the Yankees' Winter Ball players as they enter the postseason. They include Hector Noesi, Ramiro Pena, Jorge Vazquez, Colin Curtis and Pat Venditte, among others.
- Yesterday was the 92nd anniversary of the day Babe Ruth was sold by Boston owner Harry Frazee to the Yankees for $125K and a $350K loan. That changed baseball, and sports, history.

If he's desperate enough to take a 2 year deal and try again at age 30
Then I’d be interested, I guess. But long-term deals for non-elite pitchers will come back and bite you most of the time. A.J. Burnett says hi.

Wait so if a team wins the bid to negotiate with a player but fails to reach an agreement...
The team gets their money back and the player returns home for another year? So couldn’t a team just win the bid to block another team from getting him without having to take a hit to the wallet?

I asked the same question during the Darvish madness
It doesn’t seem like there’s any way to prevent that, at least not according to the rules of the posting system as I’ve seen them described. The Japanese team doesn’t even know which team submitted the highest bid, so it’s not like they could reject it out of hand and keep the player (which would still accomplish the goal of keeping the guy away from a rival). It’s either on the honor system, or MLB – which appears to be the only entity that knows about the whole process – has some mechanism to punish teams that make bad-faith bids.

According to Jack Curry of YES Network, the Cubs have asked the Yankees for Jesus Montero and either Manny Banuelos or Dellin Betances in exchange for Matt Garza.
The Yankees weren’t willing to pay that steep price for John Danks before he signed an extension with the White Sox or for Gio Gonzalez before he was traded to the Nationals, so it’s highly unlikely they’d be willing to go there for Garza, who is only under team control for two more seasons. The Yankees may still add free agent starter, but they will only do so if prices come down.
Nah, bro.

Not only is Jan 3
the anniversary of Babe Ruth signing, but also the anniversary of George Steinbrenner buying the team from CBS.
