No, they won't
A-Rod and Jeter aren’t getting 60+ games at DH each, and thats what it will be. Because Jones sure as hell isn’t playing against righties.
They need another bat.

Why not?
He seems like the guy that Frank’s article perfectly describes. Him and Jones switching time at DH and outfield sounds like a good idea.
Ibanez near the outfield or this team sounds like the opposite of a good idea. He’s terrible.

This whole thing is really accentuated by the fact that Jarrod Washburn’s lefty! slop is getting absolutely tattooed and he has given up six (or is that an eight) runs in the third inning.

I don’t disagree, but this is the same team that had Marcus Thames in the outfield for 171 innings.

.747 OPS vs righties last year
and no value as a backup outfielder. We can do better than that, I would think.
Wow, I just looked at the FA list
and yeah, there’s really no good lefty DH prospects left. (since Damon hit better vs lefties)

Bonds
Would still tattoo RH pitching.

At this point in his career, Ibanez is Chris Dickerson minus the defense. The fact that he’s even being considered flies in the face of the “it’s so easy to just go and pick up a decent bat” nonsense that was part of the Montero trade rationalization.
Ibanez is Chris Dickerson minus the defense
and the humorous name.

"Raul Cocknez" doesn't have the same ring

No
But if he does come here that’s what I’m going to call him now!

But he’s an veteran! Everyone knows his name!!

I hope this is sarcastic. I don’t really want Ibanez but to say that Ibanez is now Chris Dickerson minus the defense is comical. That would assume they are even comparable offensively….which they aren’t. Hopefully it’s just sarcasim?
Raul Ibanez was one of the worst players in baseball last season. He’s completely useless against lefties, but would presumably just be used against RHP, against whom he managed a 101 wRC+. Dickerson is just as worthless against lefties and has a career 104 wRC+ against righties.
So, yeah, unless there is some kind of magical 40 year old rebirth of ability (there won’t be) Ibanez the hitter provides no upgrade over Dickerson and should never be allowed anywhere near the outfield.
come on
I don’t think Ibanez is good by any stretch but he’s definitely the better hitter. I mean comparing Ibanez’s season last year(even though it wasn’t good) to Dickerson is a complete joke. It’s comical that you even compare the two. One guy had 50 at bats(most of which are hand picked to put him in the BEST position to succeed). Like come on. Another guy played a full season(like a real MLB player) One guy is a Major League Baseball player, the other really isn’t. When talking about strictly “the hitter”, as you mentioned, I don’t see how you can think you wouldn’t want Ibanez at the plate in a big spot over Dickerson. Now putting defense and speed into the equation and I can see Dickersons value but talking about them as hitters is a waste of time….it isn’t close.
You could plug in probably any manager or GM and if they were in the WS with the pitcher spot coming up, down a run against a righty/lefty(doesn’t matter) with a guy on 2nd and 2 outs and your bench consisted of Dickerson and Ibanez, out of the 60 GM’s and managers, I’d say there is a chance all 60 would say they would pinch hit Ibanez. Dickerson would have to have some insane #‘s against that pitcher to get the chance to pinch hit there….but with 500 career AB’s I’m not sure Dickerson has even had enough at bats to have a overly positive history against a pitcher.
If either Chris Dickerson or Raul Ibanez is getting any kind of meaningul at bat, something is seriously seriously wrong. The numbers that I cited were for Dickerson’s entire career (582 PA), obviously not a ton of time, but if the only advantage that Ibanez provides over someone like Chris Dickerson is “veteran presence,” then signing him with the intention of him having any kind of role is lunacy.
At least Dickerson’s speed and defense make him a somewhat useful bench player, while Ibanez brings literally nothing to the table outside of occasionally running into a home run.
I 100% agree with all of that. I DON"T want the Yankees to sign Ibanez, I’m just saying that when talking about the two players as a hitter only, Ibanez is much much better. When talking about a players value as a whole with speed and defense being factored in of course Dickerson closes the gap. I was just pointing out the point of how they match up as hitters and how I feel Ibanez does offer much much more as a hitter. If they signed him I wouldn’t be mad because I think he could add some solid pop and could really take advantage of that short porch but it is definitely not a move I think we need to make(although i think we do need to move a move of some sort).

No To Raul.
We need to trade for a young bat one way or another. I know it will cost Hughes, but if we can land Butler im all in.

Nah
This team needs a DH against right handed pitching, but Ibanez blows.
The only FA option I would have interest in is Damon. If not him, then look at a trade.

Damon, maybe try for Dominic Brown.

I didnt know. He could also fill in at first base sometimes too. Definitely another option.

Trade?
Hughes for Seth Smith OR Brandon Allen and Tyson Ross.
If Beane hangs up, wait 3 days and request a power RP prospect instead of Ross?

$14mm in 2013 for Soriano
It really and truly is insanity. I wonder if Cashman ever sees him in the hallway and keys Steinbrenner’s car.
