do you mean "Cabrera + Fielder"?
That does make for a pretty potent lineup. Unless you’re commenting on both Pujols and Field joining the AL, which does make pitcher’s jobs harder.

very well then
I thought you got your beefy Latino-heritaged baseball players confused, but wanted to check before calling you a racist.

yeah. whaaat.
Especially since a much smaller deal could have gotten him. Boras must have called in a favor because I have no idea why the Tigers would all of a sudden decide to do this…
No, no need to clog up the DH with one person, especially a $200mm player, when the payroll is where it is at and Alex and Derek will need to fill the DH slot over the next few years.

I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.
Ahh, ok…there were quite a few folks who wanted the Yanks to sign him. I thought this was one of them.

Scott Boras: Hi Dave, I’m calling to talk to you about Prince Fielder even though you already have an immobile 1B in Miguel Cabrera, and are committed to Victor Martinez at DH for the next 4 seasons.
Dave Dombrowksi: Look, we’ll offer Prince $90M for 5 years to be our DH.
Scott Boras: 9 years, $214M
DD: $120M/6 years.
SB: 9 years, $214M
DD: $150M/7 years. But that’s it.
SB: 9 years, $214M
DD: Seriously, I’m not going any higher.
SB: 9 years, $214M
DD: Alright, I’m hanging up the phone.
SB: These are not the droids you are looking for.
DD: These aren’t the droids we’re looking for.
SB: We can go about our business.
DD: We can go about our business. We offer 9 years, $214M.
SB: We accept!

Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, Adrian Gonzalez…
Mark Teixiera will never make it to another All-Star game… or we’ll actually see a Yankee during the 9th inning.

Except that they still have V-Mart for 2013 and 2014, at $13 and $12 million per season
That means for two years the Tigers are essentially going to be paying three players about $56 million dollars ($13 for VMart, $21 for Miggy, $23 for Fielder) to three guys who are all essentially DHs. It’s almost … Steinbrenneresque. If they play Miggy at 3b and Fielder at 1b in 2013 they might just have the worst defensive infield in ML history.
oh dear god
that porch of ours is gonna get a lot of action this year….
@JonHeymanCBS prince will be the first baseman, for anyone asking. cabrera will have to change role. #tigers

Has to be

doesn't matter
This is Fielder. I’m pretty sure every one of his home runs go well over 400 feet. I think he’d hit the same number of homers no matter where he plays

Yes, and very few of those results are going to change because of Comerica Park

well, the AL got a bit more interesting this year
so the NL will be forced to load up on ace pitchers.

No way they were going to beat 9/$214
That’s insane for an AL team. I can’t believe Boras did it again.
You know, I still don't think they'd have gone 9/$214
That’s nuts for an AL team; for an NL team not even Omar Minaya would do that deal.

Detroit has separated themselves in the A.L. Central.

They might win 120 games playing an unbalanced schedule in that division
And still lose in the playoffs, of course.

Fine, 115
It’s not just Fielder; their pitching is likely to be better with a full season of Fister and an improvement from Porcello and Scherzer.
Off topic, but.....
Melky got a $6M deal from the Giants. Many people on this site are very down on him and think he will revert to the mean this year but, apparently, the Giants don’t think so.
well
“don’t think” are probably the operative words there.
Cody Ross, a righthanded batter: signed for $3M in Boston. Meanwhile they seem to be intending to field an all-lefty OF (yes, Pagan is switch, but still), with lefties Belt or Huff platooned at 1B (yes, I meant to write that). Playing 81 games in a ballpark that, on most nights, is only live to LF. GREAT SUCCESS.

Some takeaways here
1. This is an owner move. The Tigers’ owner is 85, and wants a title. Odds are he won’t be alive for the back-end of the deal, so why should he care?
2. The price on Johnny Damon just dropped back down after the V-Mart situation got resolved & Pena signed. He makes so much sense on a one-year deal.
He made 5.25 last year and is now a year older

Haha I’m sure he wants plenty, I feel like he could certainly be signed for $4m though.

Short term...
..a good pickup for Detroit.
Long term..that deal could be an albatross. I’ll say the same thing I did when Howard signed his deal with the Phillies, and multiply the sentiment by 5:
Guys with that body type, and those type of numbers, usually DO NOT age well. In years 1-3, the deal’s good. In years 4 &5? Marginal. In years 6-9? YIKES.
I KNOW Fielder has been extremely durable since he hit the league. I doubt that will continue later into his career.
Unless Fielder suddenly changes his body type or installs himself at DH for 3/4 of that deal….I can’t see this going well for the Tigers long term.
Short term…it’s possible it wins them a WS. I’d still be suspect about their defensive shortcomings at the corners, but that lineup might very well be the one that can overcome.
congrats Prince
hope we don’t trade for you in 5 years, unless its for half a season like your pops. Remember, carbs are the enemy!
