New York Yankees News: Posada Retires, Pineda Arrives, What About A DH?
Jorge Posada will officially announce his retirement at a press conference this morning. You can watch at 11 a.m. on YES.
I'm feeling great and I'm beyond excited. I never thought I would become a New York Yankee so early into my career. This is the best thing in the world. Pitching alongside CC Sabathia, I'm speechless. And playing alongside players such as Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter is unbelievable. [italics added]
A little slip of the tongue by Pineda? Funny, nonetheless. And if you're worried about the "Verducci Effect" happening to him, don't. It turns out the "effect" doesn't really exist.
- Brian Cashman said Montero was probably the best player he's ever traded.* He added that he'd look to the trade market (using his "excess pitching") to find a DH before the free agent pool. And that he still views Phil Hughes as a starter.
- 18-year-old Cuban defector LHP Gerardo Concepcion has drawn interest from the Yankees (among at least 10 clubs) and is expected to sign within two weeks.
- Let's Talk Baseball interviewed me about the recent moves the Yanks made and the upcoming season.
- 2010 playoff hero Cody Ross inked a one-year, $3M+ deal with the Red Sox.
* Check back at noon for an article examining the impact of pitchers vs. hitters in the playoffs.

So the Sox trade Scutaro to save money.
Then spend half of it on a guy who will be their right handed platoon guy in RF? I’m guessing either Crawford is likely to miss April, or they have high hopes for Punto/Avilés/Iglesias.
Or perhaps the 3 million really is the difference factor IBM ultimately signing Oswalt.

I honestly don't know what they're doing
If an extra $3M was all they needed, I can’t believe they couldn’t scrounge that up without having to trade Scutaro. The Red Sox are working ass backwards this offseason. It’s confusing.
We are going to find out Theo...
was the sole reason the Red Sox have been such a competitive team the last 10 years.

I believe I read on OTM that Crawford was expected to miss April.

So glad Hughes is still considered a starter.

The Verducci effect is overstated, and (like the more traditional Sophomore Slump) it is a rule of thumb not a law.
Yes, there are too many sub-rules and surprising exceptions, but that’s what happens when you make a first attempt at making life map onto an x-y axis. It’s a whole lot messier than a straight line.
I’d love to read the article, but the server keeps timing out. Too much traffic from PA crashed Deadspin!
Brian Cashman said Montero was probably the best player he's ever traded
Wouldnt you think he would say the best “prospect he’s ever traded”, seeing that Montero has little experience in the big leagues? I mean yes he did look great in his 61 ab’s with 4 home runs and an average over 300.. but to say hes the ‘best’ player player he’s ever traded seems a bit of an exaggeration lol.
Hedging himself?
If Montero goes berzerk and Pineda disappoints, he can say he knew Montero would be great.

Better than Phil Coke? Wilson Betemit?
Or, more seriously, Alfonso Soriano or Austin Jackson.

Certainly better than Jackson...
doubtful he will be better than Soriano, although probably close.

well maybe
Maybe the “excess pitching” he’s referring to is Phil Hughes, and maybe he’s saying he views Hughes as a starter so he can get more for him in a trade.
Similar to my first thought…they also said Noesi was going to start no matter where he was.

This.
Hughes for Guzman
Fits both teams and your DH’s name is Jesus again.

So? Just because he’s young doesn’t mean he’s going to keep getting better until __ years old. He may have topped out as a player in 2009 for all we know.

Former major league slugger and admitted steroid user Jose Canseco wants to return to the majors.
Canseco issued the following tweet late Monday night:
“Fenway 350 lifetime batting average 1 hr per every 9 at bats. I am ready to play for Boston give me a tryout.”
The funny thing is that Canseco’s numbers are wrong. He’s a career .312 hitter at Fenway Park, and only averaged one home run per 13 at bats.
I’m guessing he isn’t serious, but this man is still beyond crazy.

No, he's completely serious, go look at his Twitter.

I doubt it
Pineda was 6’3 180 lbs when he was first signed, and 6’5 around 2-3 years ago, the adult male body stops growing around the age of 21 years old. This is about as close to a zero percent chance of him not being 23 as you can possible get. No one in there mid 20’s grows several inches in height unless they have a serious genetic condition, in which case Pineda wouldn’t be able to play baseball anyway.

Those lying bastards said they would call up someone in their system to replace VMart.
I called them liars right away, but I thought they would be looking at the same type of players that the Yankees are after, not Cecil Fielder’s little boy.

Dont post here much,
But what are we going to do about the DH? I dont want to rotate in the postseason…
I do think the Verducci Effect exists
But we shouldn’t worry about Pineda anyway, he only through 31 more innings than last year .
"I could never wear another uniform," he said. "I will forever be a Yankee."
Great words from a great Yankee.
See you around Yankeeland in years to come Jorge. Thanks for everything!
