MLB Hot Stove Round Up: Keeping Up Appearances

Ryan Braun will be in New York this evening to accept his MVP award from the BBWAA. Braun has shied away from the public eye since it was revealed that he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, which has made his appearance at the event a cause of great interest. In addition to Braun, former Mets SS will be back in town to accept the BBWAA's "You Gotta Have Heart" award.

The Daily News caught up with Michael Pineda back in his native Dominican Republic and got his thoughts about being traded to the Yankees and playing in New York.

The Red Sox and Rockies were reportedly close to a trade involving Marco Scutaro, but both sides backed away from the deal. The Red Sox have been facing a budget crunch, and the $6 million freed up by trading Scutaro could help out in the team's pursuit of another pitcher.

Star-divide

Perhaps responding to the arrest of Fausto Carmona, who has admitted to falsifying his age by three years, the Cleveland Indians acquired pitcher Kevin Slowey from the Colorado Rockies.

The San Francisco Giants avoided arbitration with reliever Sergio Romo, but coming to an accord with former Cy Young Tim Lincecum has proven more difficult. With his potentially record-setting arbitration case still pending, the two sides are reportedly in the midst of negotiating a two-year pact that could be worth more than $20 million per season.

In the midst of an austerity plan, the Oakland Athletics have been forced to scour the scrap heap for talent. According to ESPNdeportes, the team is interested in signing suspended slugger Manny Ramirez to be a DH, a role that could also be filled by the recently acquired Jonny Gomes.

Entering 2011, Alex Gordon's career was widely viewed as a disappointment. However, after a breakout campaign, the outfielder is now set up for a nice payday. Gordon and the Royals are currently preparing to go to arbitration to settle a $1.3 million difference of opinion about his 2012 salary, but the Kansas City Star suggests the team should look into a long-term extension or risk having the 28-year old play himself out of their price range.

Nick Markakis, who is recovering from abdominal surgery, has proclaimed himself fit to start the season.

The Yankees are already hovering around the payroll number they have maintained for the past couple of years. They’ve made no indication at all that they want to go over that number. They want to cut payroll to 189 million in the next few years. Spending tons of money unnecessarily is the opposite of what they are trying to do for the future and exactly what has gotten them into such a mess for the present.

OT but...
ESPN’s Jayson Stark wrote today that New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is still trying to do the impossible. That means Cashman is still trying to get someone to take overpaid, underproductive starting pitcher A.J. Burnett off the team’s hands.

As Stark wrote, "good luck with that."

It appears, though, that Cashman is going to have to be a miracle worker in order to get Burnett out of pinstripes.

Just wanted to say what was put on ESPN (this particular block is from SBN NY). I have no comment.

It doesn't seem like it.

He traded SS Lowrie for a reliever, replaced him with Punto, hasn’t made any SP signings beyond barrel bottom scraping for guys like Cook and Padilla, and is now looking to trade his other SS Scutaro for a guy who pitches worse than Cook and Padilla. He also overpaid Salty in a deal to avoid arbitration that, if it was a compromise between both sides, Cherington would have easily won. Oswalt’s only asking for a 1 year deal at $8 million, isn’t he? What is taking so long to sign him? He’s missed out on a bargain in Kuroda, also. It’s like he’s taken the reigns and he’s out there trying to prove that he doesn’t need to sign a good player to have a winning team, like he’s got something to prove. It’s very strange. At least that’s how it looks to me.

Apparently they have no payroll space left

It looks like he started the offseason spending and then was told they had a budget in mind so he never had time to get a pitcher before signing all the players they didn’t really need. I’m trying to be nice here.

Remaining FA arms that would only need a minor league deal/very cheap 1 year deal: Kyle Davies, Doug Davis, Zach Duke, Jeff Francis, Jon Garland, Rich Harden, Livan Hernandez, Kevin Millwood, Ross Ohlendorf, Brad Penny, Chris Young

Apparently with Oswalt they want to get the most expensive/“best”/big name they can get, while most of those names would be easy upgrades.

Iglesias and Middlebrooks. Boom.

Back in realty they have NO ONE. Next time, sign the pitchers BEFORE you sign the backup infielders.

by jetanumba2 on Jan 21, 2012 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

Sox deal sounds stupid but that deal is most likely going to result in them signing Oswalt to a one year deal. I think it’s a smart move. They definitely get weaker at shortstop but maybe they think Iglesias is ready to atleast be an elite defender(he’s supposed to be filthy with the glove) and then whatever they get from him offensively is a bonus. Kind of what they did in ‘04, got rid of Nomar because it “made the team better defensively” and it worked out. We’ll see. BUTTTTT Iglesias is probably not ready to be an ML starter so Aviles and Punto it is!!!

by cermolaNY2 on Jan 21, 2012 7:06 PM EST reply actions

Not that I think Oswalt is a bad pitcher

But doesn’t he present the same risk to the Red Sox pitching rotation as last year, that being injury risks?
