Prince Fielder?

What an addition Prince Fielder would be to the Yankees. That short porch in right field would definitely increase his home run output.

The most reported stumbling block for him to receive a six to ten year contract is his demand to be able to opt out of his contract in three years. This could cause a general manager to pull his hair out.

Fielders demand for an opt out clause, would allow him to hit the free agent market again at 30 years of age. That would allow Prince to obtain another large contract.

Would the Yankees go 25 to 28 million a year for three years? This might work out for that 189 million figure we keep hearing about for salaries in 2014. The Yankees have several million coming off the books before the 2014 season. (See spreadsheet below)

NEW YORK AL MLS thru '11 season Updated 12/11 salary + p-r bonus

Rodriguez, Alex 3b 17.011 Scott Boras 10 yr/$275M (08-17) $30 $29.00 $26.00 $22.00

Teixeira, Mark 1b 9 Scott Boras 8 yr/$180 (09-16) $23 $23.13 $23.13 $23.13
Burnett, A.J. rhp-s 12.038 Darek Braunecker 5 yr/$82.5M (09-13) $17 $16.50
Jeter, Derek ss 16.043 CAA (Casey Close, Jack Tiernan, Jennifer Brasile) 3 yr/$51M (11-13) $16 $17.00 $3.00
Rivera, Mariano rhp 16.105 SFX Fernando Cuza (SFX - Spkrs of Spt) 2 yr/$30M (11-12) $15 FA
Cano, Robinson 2b 6.153 Scott Boras 4 yr/$30M (08-11)+12-13 cl opts $14 $2.00
Soriano, Rafael rhp 9.057 Scott Boras 3 yr/$35M (11-13) $11 $14.00 FA
Swisher, Nick lf-rf 7.031 Dan Lozano 5 yr/$26.75M (07-11)+12 cl opt $10
Granderson, Curtis cf 6.077 Matt Brown 5 yr/$30.25M (08-12)+13 cl opt $10 $2.00

It would be a wise move to sign Prince Fielder for three or four years.

What do you think?

It would be awesome if they could get him for two years and pay out the ass for him while avoiding 2014 all together, but that is just entirely unrealistic and it makes it look like a fantasy team.

Also, make sure you give credit to sources. Unless you actually created your own spreadsheet with Yankee players, their service time, their agent, and their yearly salaries. Otherwise it looks a lot like Cot’s.

No, it wouldn’t. There is a good chance you’re getting fair value for your investment as he’s still in his prime.

Looks like you contradicted yourself.

Prince Fielder

If the opt-out clause were mutual, the Yanks might have some protection in case Fielder balloons. Even though he is younger, he is unlikely to match Tex defensively in the next few years. But he would be a viable option is Tex needs to be out of the line-up. But I do not think that Prince is likely to come to NY. I still think that Vasquez (Scranton 2011) should get a serious look — he might be a similar hitter to Pena in TB at a bargain price.
