Quick Overview of Yankee Prospects to Watch

A quick run down of top prospects and/or guys I personally find interesting, their ages, positions, stats from last season, and my best guess at where they will start the 2012 season within the system. For those who don't follow the minors very closely, hopefully this can get you acquainted with some guys you may have not heard of yet.

*Some guys were promoted to a new level during the season. If they had close to a meaningful number of ABs/innings at both levels, I posted both sets of numbers, otherwise I left the smaller numbers off completely due to extreme SSS. There are still some SSS here, but take them as just that.

Nice listing.

Now where would Jose Campos fit in?

Very informative

I see a lot of nice names on that list, and by nice I mean punnable!

Who the hell is Daniel Lopez

and why aren’t people having Mason Williams sized orgasms over his stats? He’s younger, at a higher level and posted a higher wOBA and wRC+

by jetanumba2 on Jan 20, 2012 9:35 AM EST reply actions

Lopez’s numbers at every level so far have been really impressive and he skipped Staten Island completely. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2009, but wasn’t projected to be very special, which is probably why he isn’t getting Mason Williams hype. I definitely plan on keeping an eye on what he does this season. If he keeps his numbers up at Low A, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him move toward the 15ish range on the list of prospects.

Lopez has a good bat

But he is not very good defensively, from what I have heard.

ManBan probably

I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.- Kobe Bryant

Interesting,

I was thinking of a combination of ManBan, Sanchez and Williams. Another possibility is Bichette Jr., Campos and Lopez.

I love the name Claudio Custodio

It sounds both regal & janitorial at the same time!

Since when is Montgomery a reliever?

his stats look ridiculous if he can maintain them over 30-40 more innings (presuming he’s is a reliever)

by jetanumba2 on Jan 20, 2012 6:15 PM EST reply actions

He was Charleston’s closer.

He’s slotted to be a reliever.

He hasn’t started once since being drafted and closed through nearly all of college, from what I know.

David Adams and Isaias Tejada deserve attention too.

Yes, that is Mike Marra.

If David Adams proves he can be healthy, then I’ll start to be concerned with him. I’m in the process of adding Tejada and a few others.

How about Branden Pinder?

He needs a 2nd pitch in the worst kind of way. Fastball or die.

how do you know this stuff?

Is there a blog I don’t know about or something? I want to know more about the non-top ten possibly overhyped prospects

I am a minors nerd, so I spend a lot of time looking up stuff about them. When I was coming up with this list, I poured over a lot of information about a ton of different guys and I have a kind of scary level of photographic memory. Thus, I can recite useless facts about them.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jan 20, 2012 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

ah, I see

I don’t think i’m at that level of obsession yet, but maybe in time i’ll get around to picking apart everyone in the system haha! Until then i’ll be counting on PSA nerds to help me out. Don’t have a photographic memory though…

It’s fun if you’re actually interested in that type of thing. Trenton has a live video feed of their home games, so I watched a few of those last season when ManBan and Dellin were still there. I like knowing a lot about it.

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Jan 20, 2012 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

yeah I bought MiLB last season

it was cheap but it absolutely SUCKED and I couldn’t really get into it with it like that. I watched a few innings here and there, but I had no idea who any was because there were no graphics and the announcing was terrible.

I’m surprised I find looking through stats as interesting as i do. I’m awful at everything related to math, but when it comes to comparing WAR and wOBA, it freaking awesome for some reason!

by jetanumba2 on Jan 20, 2012 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

The best thing to do is to add the Scranton Blog (http://blogs.thetimes-tribune.com/yankees/) and the Trenton Thunder Blog (http://thunderbaseball.wordpress.com/) to you reading list. That way you get the story beyond the box score.

Of course, I’m biased against young players. There’s a world of difference between hitting .300/.350/.400 in the Gulf Coast League and the same numbers in Trenton. I’ve been disappointed by the development of so many players who had great seasons in the lower levels, that I’ve basically stopped following anyone until they hit AA.

yeah I'm pretty close to agreeing with you there

While people like Bichette and Williams are exciting, they shouldn’t be anywhere near the Top 5 prospects of the system, especially when there’s major league ready talent. I’ll need to see another year from them before I can consider them to be for real.

Nik Turley

Is one of my favorite Yankees sleeper picks, and I would like to think part of my hounding got him on John Sickles’ list this year. Turley is a 6’7" lefty with a low 90s fastball. He was drafted in the 50th and final round of 2008, but signed for sixth round money, $125,000, to break his commitment to BYU. He has moved along slowly in the Yankees system. This year, as a 21 year old in Charleston, he had a 3.53 FIP, a 9.0 K/9, and a 3.90 K/BB. He missed the last month to a broken hand from a line drive in his second start in Tampa. I expect big things from him in Tampa next year.

by cookiedabookie on Jan 21, 2012 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Some missing.

I think we will see either De Leon, Sosa, or Mesa have a breakout season this year. They all have skills and one will put it together. I think it will be De Leon, I hope it will be all three.

It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.
I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.
