It is ungodly slow over there.

I commend your site for constantly putting up articles (most of them worthwhile) for your members to discuss. I wish DRB would pick up their game.

And we have discussed it quite a bit. Looking for outsiders’ points of view on it. It’s a good baseball discussion, if that’s what you’re into.

High school math to underprivileged youth who are at risk of dropping out

mainly algebra 2, personal finance, and precalc, but also basics like algebra 1 and geometry.

My biggest goal is to get the students to pass their exit TAKS exam, which is a TX state test that they need to pass in order to graduate, and that only deals with alg1 and geometry, but the other subjects come into play because they still need 4 math credits to graduate, not just the two.

You know what you should do?

Whenever one of your students asks a stupid question write down that question on the whiteboard in quotations and put their name after it. So it would be like: “Is a diameter this line here?” -Billy. And leave it on the board to humiliate them until someone else asks a stupid question and put that one on the board. It would be kind of like what you are doing right now in your signature.

by Briceratops on Jan 2, 2012 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Literally only 2% of the students plus the math department (5 other teachers)

would get the joke.

The diameter question wouldn’t even be close to making the cut, either.

Borderline, but yes.

If you think Edgar is a HOF, then easily Walker would be.

I have Walker as borderline yes because while his numbers are the greatest, he was an excellent defender and speed was also part of his game. He basically did it all.

Looking good for Larkin so far, and not so bad for Rock & Bagwell! Jack Morris is too high, but I half-expected that.

Borderline cases for me, and I tend to lean towards a small hall reserved for truly transcendent players. I view steroid users in a similar light to Larry Walker absolutely abusing Coors Field. The guys had an advantage, but it’s unclear to what extent they benefited, and if it’s a borderline case, it would make them a lot more likely to tip to a no.

I’d vote for Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, Manny, and A-Rod, but I think I would likely lean against voting for those two, although I could possibly be swayed by a good argument.

Rafael Palmeiro: 74.3
Mark McGwire: 70.6
Manny Ramirez: 69.6
Sammy Sosa: 64.1

Career wRC+
Palmeiro: 130

I’m not so sure that Sosa & Manny should be Hall of Famers while McGwire & Palmeiro shouldn’t be.

I read an interesting argument from James Kann at AA against Palmeiro

He has excellent career numbers, but only two (or three?) seasons with greater than 5 WAR. James was weighting peak WAR very highly. If you’re into that sort of thing, you could make a case against Palmeiro.

By that time, Bernie was below average with the bat and a complete disaster in the field, and with Damon and Giambi getting the bulk of the DH duties, there really wasn’t any way for him to contribute. Maybe he could have been a very limited 5th outfielder and pinch hitter behind Melky, Damon, Abreu, and Matsui, but it is quite difficult to take a former star and put them in such a reduced role.
