Ryan Madson: Loser of the Offseason
Remember when the Phillies were on the brink of giving Ryan Madson over $40 million before pulling the plug to fill up Jonathan Papelbon's van with money? Similar to what happened last year with Rafael Soriano, there does not seem to be much noise around Madson, despite some stellar seasons in Philadelphia. Hopefully this time he doesn't end up in New York with a fistful of opt-out clauses and a fairy tale about shortened games.

Worst Defenders Since 2002
Since UZR came into being, the very worst of the worst defensively. Topping the list are Manny Ramirez (who retired in protest) and Bernie Williams. Given that Bernie is now on the Hall of Fame ballot, there will be a lot of retroactive evaluation of his defense, which defensive statistics rate as solid in the first half of his career and abysmal in the second half.

Melvin Mora has Retired
Melvin Mora hit .340/.419/.562 in 2004. He hit .228/.244/.276 in 2011.

Evan Longoria Denies Trade Talk
When rumors surface on Twitter that you've become dissatisfied with your team's small-marketness, the only way to dispel such nonsense is via text message. Evan Longoria knows this. No word yet on Joe Maddon's ironic iPhone response.

Hey!

The Mets could sign him and weaken a division rival with the move.

All the quotes:

Sources told ESPN New York’s Wallace Matthews that the Yankees are unlikely to trade for Matt Garza.
The Cubs want young pitching in return, and the Yanks are refusing to give up top pitching prospects Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances.

The Yankees have until Friday to work out a deal with Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima.
The deadline was originally reported as Tuesday, but that was apparently incorrect. Still, the Yankees are far apart in negotiations with the 29-year-old Nakajima and he’s said to be considering a return to his native Japan. They simply can’t offer him a guaranteed roster spot.
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Yankees “have been talking about” Edwin Jackson.
But they don’t like his current asking price, which is thought to be five years, $60 million.

While i'm content with our current rotation

In a bubble I would honestly consider trading one of the B’s for Garza (as long as the entire package is not that demanding) since Garza has already proved to be very effective in the AL East and is still young.

Nakajima will not be a Yankee. It’s not happening. I’m not sure what got crossed up in this whole thing, maybe Cashman planned on trading Nunez?

I think Cash may be becoming a little too protective of his prospects

This team needs starting pitching, and while I love the Killer B’s I’d definitely at least consider giving up one of them if it can mean adding Matt Garza to this rotation. He’s a very good pitcher with terrific stuff who could turn this teams biggest question mark into a strength.

I probably wouldn’t give up both, but maybe I’d include one if the rest of the package wasn’t ridiculous. I just don’t understand completely refusing to give up any top prospects. Especially for a pitcher like Garza, who in my opinion would be a very good number two starter.

With good free agent options left, I wouldn’t rush into trading ManBan AND Dellin for Garza. The wording makes it sound like they want both. If there were no Hiroki Kuroda, Edwin Jackson, Paul Maholm, or Roy Oswalt, then maybe it would be time to get a little more desperate, but there’s no need to do that right now.

I probably wouldn't trade both anyways

And if thats truly what the Cubs want, then yea, screw it. My question is that they seem to be reluctant to spend money as well as parting with prospects. I can understand why, but if they actually want to make a real upgrade in the rotation, then they’ll either have to give up something valuable in a trade, or they’re going to have to spend upwards of 10 million dollars. Otherwise they’ll be going into 2012 with the same team as 2011.

I think the team can still compete as it is but an upgrade would be nice. I think Kuroda or Oswalt on a one year deal would be the best option if they want to both cut payroll and keep prospects. But their interest in them has seemed minimal at best up to this point too, so we’ll see.
