Derek Jeter Wins Lou Gehrig Award

As many of you know, Lou Gehrig is my favorite athlete of all-time, my hero, an inspiration to me, etc. I pay very close attention each year to who wins the Lou Gehrig Award, so imagine my happiness when I heard the winner this year.

Derek Jeter.

I believe this is Jeter's second consecutive time winning the award, with previous winners being Albert Pujols, Shane Victorino, Mike Timlin, and Trevor Hoffman.

The award is given to "players who best exemplify his character and integrity both on and off the field."

"Any time you get honored for your philanthropic work, that makes you feel good. Any award named after Lou Gehrig, it probably means a lot more to me than some other players," Jeter said. "It feels good. Any time you get an award for the work that you do away from the field, in my opinion, means that much more."

Congratulations to Derek Jeter, and great work by all the players that use their position in the world for charity.

I’m assuming all of jeter’s strike outs didn’t factor into the decision?

What?

He K’d just 81 times last season. I still don’t get the relevance though.

I wish I could have convinced someone to take me in a million dollar bet that this would be referenced somewhere in this thread.

Congrats to Jeter

Well deserved.

I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.- Kobe Bryant
