What is actually being plotted here?

Are these means and medians over the top ten last season, or does it extend over multiple seasons? (I’d suggest the latter to build up sample size. It’s tempting to want to say based on these numbers that the elite players’ defense declines a lot faster than their offense. But that just might be noise.)

Without “scientific” research I would say that’s absolutely the case.

This is just last season. I originally intended to go into previous seasons, but the amount of data collection was pretty prohibitive.

My conclusion was also that defensive value peaks early while hitting progresses more slowly. However, the amount of production from guys on the wrong side of 30 was pretty thin on the ground. The fact that A-Rod’s 4.2 fWAR put him in a tie for the 3rd most valuable player over the age of 33 is pretty terrifying for the future.

Horrifying for anybody's future.

The fact that only five players above 33 put up WARs over 3.5 is pretty astonishing.

Understood about the amount of data to sift through, though I bet it wouldn’t be difficult for someone at Fangraphs.

"WHO WOULD LEAD?! THE CLOWN?!"

by I'mGivingYouARaise on Jan 18, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

The over 33 leaders were:

Lance Berkman (5.0)
Carlos Beltran (4.7)
Alex Rodriguez (4.2)
David Ortiz (4.2)
Michael Young (3.8)
Carlos Lee (3.2)
Paul Konerko (3.1)
Marco Scutaro (2.9)
Placido Polanco (2.8)
Todd Helton (2.6)

Comparatively, 10 of the top 15 players by fWAR were in the 28-30 bracket, with Jose Reyes being tenth at 6.2.

Are provocative and profound titles going to be a theme now?
