I wonder if they’ll elect not to make a run at Hamels next year in free agency since they got Pineda. If they’re serious about not getting taxed in 2014, I’m not sure they can get Hamels.

If they're serious about 189MM in 2014 they can't sign anyone like that

No Hamels, no Cain, no Josh Hamilton, etc.

A-Rod, Tex and C.C. make like 72 mil combined. Cano will be a free agent after 2013. Hopefully he’ll be re-signed before that, but if he’s here, he’ll be making over 20 mil a year by 2014. That’s over 90 mil on 4 players.

The rest of the teams’ contracts expire before then, but included in that are some major contributors who need to be either re-signed or replaced. I doubt the Yankees can afford another big free agent and still be competitive on $189 mil.

I would think (hope) they don't need to spend $$$ on another big name pitcher now

CC + Nova + Pineda + hopefully Man-Ban/Betances is a good (great!) rotation for 2013

by waw on Jan 17, 2012 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

Phil Hughes

Ever wonder why some pitchers are only good in odd years, or even years, or relievers are really good then suck the next year? Most guys aren’t capable of throwing hard as often as they need to for more than a season or two in a row. The few that can are aces, studs or the well paid mediocre starters. Yeah, Hughes’ drop-off was well documented with a huge drop in velocity, but I’d expect that to be back this year and he’ll be an asset to the Yanks.

I think Crawford will have a very good year

it was apparent that he was nervous and felt the pressure of the contract (like pujols will) now i feel he will settle in and have a decent year. Still won’t be enough to win the AL East but (that team)‘s fans shouldn’t be happy he wont be there, but i don’t expect any more from them.

by DOC CARTER on Jan 17, 2012 5:34 PM EST reply actions

I expected Crawford's stats to return to his career mean levels as well.

Not 100% sure now. Depends if this wrist thing lingers through April and even till early May. If he struggles when he comes back, the fans may pile on him and if it’s pressure that got to him in 2011 who knows what happens if he becomes this year’s John Lackey to the Nation?

by ArunK on Jan 17, 2012 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

The wrist usually drastically effects power hitters only

and although Crawford has power i don’t view him as that, nor am i saying you do. Now I’m not saying it won’t cause some problems because obviously it’s going to take some time to get over it mentally as well as physically. Also if boston fans pile on this guy again I don’t think we will ever see TB Crawford because he is locked up for the rest of his career and he will have no confidence nor motivation.

He should do what J.D Drew did and not give a damn.

by DOC CARTER on Jan 17, 2012 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

A fair prediction

Aside from his motivation, how many of Crawford’s 5 tools are even left? He’s a lefty, so surgery on his left wrist may kabong his arm and power. Last year, when healthy, his speed was down and his average was abysmal with no protection. He had a leg injury for a bit. And let’s not forget that the Sox season ended with an O’s come-from-behind bloop that Crawford muffed. I feel bad for the guy, but he has a lot of time to salvage his dignity and skills if he can get healthy and get his head together. Drew at least did perform when healthy (although he was rarely at 100%), and from what I remember blocked out the Boston-ness fairly well notwithstanding.

That said, I lived up in Boston last year and relished experiencing their injuries and collapse from inside the hornet’s nest. Although they haven’t made any additions this year, and lost so many key figure, I somehow can’t imagine this year will be as much of a complete disaster for them as last year.

$4.4 mill for David Price?

A nice $ 2 mill raise, but still grossly underpaid. What a steal.

by brother_rat on Jan 17, 2012 5:53 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, I saw that

Price matched Dontrelle’s figures from six years ago, after his monster 22-win Cy Young year. No surprise for Dontrelle, but that was 6 yrs ago; one would think that there’d be some increase in that time. Still, not too shabby.

Terrible

Not quite as bad as RB in the NFL…giving up their body and career for the team before ever getting paid…But, similarly terrible anyhow. These guys deserve to get paid when they are good and the guys sucking or on the DL deserve not to be paid. Oh well, there are far worse injustices in the world.

It’s a a function of the suppressed salaries a player had received in his first 3 seasons without leverage. Arbitration salary figures are also non-guaranteed and a player could be cut without full pay.

Martin filed for $8.2M while the Yankees countered with $7M. Russ actually holds the salary record for first and second time eligible catchers. This is his fourth year of arbitration eligibility as a Super Two.

That’s quite the raise from four…

by Briceratops on Jan 17, 2012 8:02 PM EST reply actions

Ironically, most would say he did

Let me ask you something. If Martin put up the exact same numbers, but Jesus Montero never existed, or played a different position, would people be more happy with him as the catcher? I’m not trying to argue that he was good, but it seems like the ill will towards Russ has a hell of a lot more to do with Montero than it does with him. He was actually quite good when compared to other catchers.

I go to a lot of games and I meet and talk baseball to a lot of Yankees fans during the games, and almost none of them had anything bad to say about Russell Martin. Most Yankee fans love the guy. Some even compared him to Thurman (which is too far). But he seems to be one of the most hated players on PSA, and I think thats actually really interesting.

Not true

Martin had nothing to do with holding anyone back. If anything the hate should be directed at the Yankees front office and possibly Joe “I love me a defensive catcher” Girardi.

Martin is just another guy trying to make a living.

Catcher defensive stats

No good stat for them, even catcher ERA…but leading that staff of miss-fits to the post season was incredible. Great season behind the dish and more than adequate at the plate… hits in April equal hits in August.

I think the Jesus freaks did muddy Martin’s rep on this site.

My only distaste for him is that he TOTALLY lost his way by October and 3M (Mental Midget Manager) should have pinch hit for him when Yanks were trailing. That catching fraternity is a little spooky…too many balls off the skull :)

by steelerwheeler on Jan 18, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

I think the Jesus freaks did muddy Martin’s rep on this site.

I think his offense falling off a cliff between May and July had more to do with it. Whether that was mostly due to Girardi’s insistence on starting him every single game, who knows? I’d blame Girardi more for this than the fans on this site, who may be vocal, but tend to have very little impact on the actual games.

would they HAVE to come up with a deal still, just not necessarily the arbitration number?

by jetanumba2 on Jan 17, 2012 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

if they accept, the team is stuck with them

There’s a risk for the team – if the guy accepts they’re bound to at least go to arbitration. I guess there’s also a risk for the player – once he agrees he’s no longer a FA. So the team and the player are stuck with each other, but if they can come to a deal before arbitration, they don’t have to go through the process.

Umm...

I know my PSA fWAR is down, but I’ve been training all off-season, and I really feel that 2012 is going to be my year!

What're your day-night splits?

I feel like you only contribute in open threads, and choke on Gameday threads. You also have an attitude problem, and are due for a regression.

DUMP!

Hmph. Forgot about positional adjustments, did you?

From a frequent poster to a Designated Poster is a 30 PAR swing. You just won’t be worth your contract.

At least he's not as overpaid as Jedi

Sure, he posts a lot of funny gifs, but that was still way too big a contract to give him for as many years as he got.

I think that's why they really gave him the money

It was cause of the GIF. narrative that exists here on PSA

I think we need a fancy posts with graphs to reveal that he's really just a 2 to 3 PAR player

Even though I shudder to think what a replacement level poster at PSA is.

Second time with blueberries. But I found ‘em last time. This time I’m in a heap o’ shit. I scrubbed it with a washcloth and some dishwashing liquid but it didn’t get it all out…

sports

Sports plagues a garbage beneath the researcher. Before a manner dashes the crashing revenge. Sports railroads a sphere. Sports scandalizes each citizen throughout a why. Sports fumes this prime wizard without a slice. When can her temporary smoker retract Sports?
