New York Yankees News: Hughes, Pineda & The DH
Phil Hughes avoided arbitration by signing a one-year deal worth at least $3.2M with the Yankees, a raise of $500K. It inlcudes incentives bases on number of starts, so at least they still see that potential in him. He'll be a free agent after the 2013 season.
- Something I found intriguing (and a little scary) is the emphasis Brian Cashman put on Michael Pineda's effort to develop a third quality pitch, in this case a changeup. How often do we hear about how pitchers are going to learn/use their changeups more, but it fails to happen? It feels like a lot to me.
- An interview with Kevin Long revealed management's apparent unwillingness to give the DH spot to Triple-A masher, Jorge Vazquez. He just doesn't think much of his discipline and contact ability.
- Several other candidates have popped up as being the potential DH: Hideki Matsui (whom the Yanks have reached out to), Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon.
- Though a deal between the Rangers and Yu Darvish hasn't been reached yet, they're fully expected to, probably minutes before the 5 p.m. EST deadline tomorrow.
- Chris Jaffe of THT ran down Jorge Posada's career highlights.
- Yoenis Cespedes is not helping his case to be paid like a star: He's gone 1-15 in the Dominican Winter League with the hit being an infield single.
- The San Francisco Giants are trying to extend the contracts of Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, so don't get your hopes up of seeing Cain in pinstripes in 2013.
- Why has baseball declined in Puerto Rico? Its Olympic Committee president blames the MLB draft, saying it's deflated salaries for kids looking to turn pro.
- No more Colon. Bartolo signed a one-year deal with the A's for $2M.
- Vicente Padilla signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox.
- A Connecticut man conned $35K by claiming he was going to sell Yankee Stadium dirt.
- Hiroyuki Nakajima still hopes to play in the U.S., but he'll have an easier time negotiating next year when he's a true free agent.

The way Jim Bowden phrased Cashman's comment
makes Cashman sound like an ass…
Also, anyone else disliking all the “Yankees are world series favorites” talk going on since the trade? Always feels like the kiss of death to me, though it did work out well in 09.
From a fan perspective, would like to see Matsui back in pinstripes. However, also need to consider how much Arod, Jeter, Tex, Jones will be using the spot. Its not like giving Jorge Vazquez an opportunity in the DH spot means he’ll be there every day. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.
Just about a month til Spring Training, cant wait!!!
"Kevin Long...doesn't think much of (Vazquez') discipline and contact ability."
Isn’t that something that Long can correct? Seems like this would be right up his alley.
Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."

Soo... what is the rotation going to be this year?
We’ve got CC as a lock in the rotation
The fact that Cash traded Montero for Pineda and signed Kuroda for $10 million would suggest that they are both de facto locks in the rotation.
Then we’ve got Phil, AJ, Ivan, and Freddy all fighting for the last 2 spots. Freddy was “guaranteed a rotation spot.” Phil has an incentive based on starts, which would suggest they want him starting. AJ’s not getting $16.5 million to be a long-relief man. Ivan was the undisputed #2 from the moment he got off the SWB-to-NY bus until the moment we were eliminated from the playoffs. Which 2 of those 4 will not be in the rotation?
Spring training tends to sort these thinh

But yeah, spring training. Injury or underperformance will eliminate at least one candidate.

Hughes and Nova
Hughes has to pitch himself out of the rotation and into the pen. Remember Joba is coming back – to the pen. They need Hughes to start and to do well. He will.
Nova was the #2 last year. Nuff said.
AJ will get moved. It will cost Cash but AJ staying just creates too many problems.
Garcia may well start if somone gets injured but he’ll startthe season in the pen because, like Hughes, he does well there.
One person’s opinion.

When has Garcia done well in the pen?
I thought the reason they didn’t want him in the pen was that he took too long to warm up?
I could be wrong....
but thought that was Colon.

Other way around. Colon had to start last season in the pen over Freddy, despite having a better Spring Training, because Freddy takes too long to warm up.

You're right
That being said, I still like Hughes and Nova as #4 and #5 in the rotation.

AJ and/or Hughes gets dealt.
The Yanks do Hughes a favor and demote him to the NL.

rotation
Jettison Burnett – enough is enough. Let him go with $25 million & pick up a prospect.
DH
We have Jones… and like Griffman said, we need to rotate bodies through the slot…even though I would love to see Matsui back in pinstripes one more time, it seems to me that Raul Ibanez is the best fit for a PT LH DH. No one is biting on him in the open market, he absolutely rakes RH pitching and born in NYC…just saying.

would rather see someone who can sub Tex at 1st
which leans me towards Pena… as it stands, I’m not sure there’s anyone else on the roster who can play 1st, let alone well.
But then we have a drop-off in RF
If Pena backed up Tex at 1B, and Swish stayed in RF, the lineup is better.
Bonds
Can’t fathom the numbers he’d put up. I’d bet a lot of dough he’s still a 1.000 OPS even now.

that would be pretty gutsy
I could see Bonds being interested. A chance to rehabilitate his image and win a World Series. Plus he’d restart the clock on his HOF vote so that he wouldn’t be on the ballot with Clemens and voters would have a chance to digest a superstart with PED problems. The more I think about it, the more I like it.
by long time listener on Jan 17, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions
I don't think the Yankees want anything to do with Bonds.
Too toxic and he’d be a huge media distraction. Also I’m fairly certain this idea was tossed around when he was unsigned in the middle of 2008 and the Yanks wanted offensive help and they didn’t bite then so they wouldn’t now.

That would actually be really funny if they signed him

Seems like all thats happened to A-Rod over the past 7 years, but he still gets blasted
NY can change their minds VERY quickly. Unless it’s a true Yankee!

As much hate as Alex gets, I can't imagine Bonds getting any less
Probably much, much more. Throw in his hostile relationship with the press, and you have a recipe for U-G-L-Y, You-Ain’t-Go-No-Alibi levels of fan rejection.
DH for right handers
We’re talking about 200 AB’s or less here. A delta of .050 on the batting average between Jorge and Pena can’t be worth $5 Million. Plus I think alot more negativity is being assumed from Long’s comments about Jorge than the way I read it. Then again, paying Matsui $2 Million would generate alot more gate receipts from Asians.
Whether or not you think the Yankees need to sign a DH, consider this:
If they don’t sign a bat, they’re awfully thin on the bench. Aging Andruw Jones (and “Aging Andruw” should be his legal first name at this point) and Eduardo Nunez will find themselves in the lineup quite a bit, playing or DHing, and with Jeter/ ARod/ Teixeira out resting or injured, that doesn’t leave much bench strength.
Bringing back Damon or Matsui seems more like a nostalgia trip than a real smart move. If I had to choose one, it would be Damon, who could stand in the outfield for an inning or two if he had to, and can still flick inside pitches over the 314 sign.
by designatedquitter on Jan 17, 2012 2:11 PM EST reply actions
It's funny to think of Andruw Jones as "aging"
when he’s only 35 in April, compared to Jeter and A-Rod, who will be 38 in June (Jeter) and 37 in July (A-Rod).

DH
I’ve been hearing that there are trade talks between the Yankees & the Royals about Hughes & Butler in a package. He’d be a really good DH for us, and it would assure everyone that Freddy Garcia would be the #5…I wouldn’t mind seeing Burnett in that trade either.

Will Joba be ready for spring training?
wonder if the Cubs would take AJ for Soriano? Bad contract for bad contract
"Talent is God-given; be humble. Fame is man-given; be grateful. Conceit is self-given; be careful." John Wooden
Why would they want Soriano?
Getting rid of AJ isn’t worth adding another horrible contract on this team. Especially at a position they have absolutely no need for right now.
If they truly are going to get rid of him, then I’d rather they dump him for absolutely nothing. Give him to a team willing to take a good portion of the contract, ask for absolutely nothing back, and move on with life. I’m still one of those rare souls who still thinks AJ can be good and therefore I don’t really want him traded, but if he is going to be moved I’d want it under that circumstance. So much better than taking on another awful contract.
As for the fat kid, Joba’s out until around the All-Star break.
