Why The New York Yankees Will Not Sign Prince Fielder

The New York Yankees traded Jesus Montero last night, and that immediately sparked some Prince Fielder to the Yankees rumors.

Montero was expected to be the Yankees DH in 2012, so now that the Yankees have an opening at DH Fielder seems like a perfect fit.

Here are reasons why the Yankees will not sign Prince Fielder:

-The Yankees have a budget (yes, they really do!) The Yankees were not willing to overpay for Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda, (the price went down) C.J. Wilson, or any other pitcher. The Yankees had a need at starting pitcher, too. With no need at DH, and a budget, the Yankees and Fielder simply do not match.

-Alex Rodriguez and others need time at DH- If the Yankees were to sign Fielder, A-Rod, Derek Jeter, even Nick Swisher would not be able to get their at bats at DH. The Yankees need the DH position to be somewhat open, and if Fielder is on the Yankees that will not be the case.

-Mark Teixeira Plays First Base- Simply put, the Yankees have a first baseman and Prince Fielder is not likely to accept a deal to be a DH.

Fielder and the Yankees do not match up well, but soon I will look at the candidates that do match up well.

Think Mark Reynolds

El Chato is just like Mark Reynolds. He’ll hit his homers, but he’ll also probably hit under .220 and strike out well over 200 times if he plays a full season.

I'll do whatever it takes to win games, whether it's sitting on a bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game-winning shot.- Kobe Bryant

DH

Give Jorge Vazquez the shot at DH. Carlos Pena is a masher but his sub 230 batting average and cost doesn’t make sense. Jorge will be sharing the DH role with ARod, Jeter, and Tex when they are resting. DH issue is settle. Let’s move on to signing a reserve infielder and we’re set for Spring Training. What’s the latest with 3B Chavez?

I’m going to miss Montero’s bat. I wish him much success in Seattle.

Also would like the Yanks to sign the Cuban, Soler. Last chance to sign an international player before the new CBA kicks in and penalizes teams like the Yanks for paying big for these high upside prospects.

Strikeouts again?

Curtis Granderson was the best player on the team last year and he set a franchise record for strikeouts! Strikeouts aren’t important so long as they can produce when they don’t strike out!

Right. When you produce, which Pena has done less and less every year more or less since 2007.

He also K’s 25% of the time versus Matsui’s 15% against righties. And like I said, last year is a bad year to use. I will take Matsui’s patient, work the count, clutch hitting bat any day over Pena’s all or nothing bat. He brings a stability to the lineup Pena could not. That’s all.

You’re entitled to your opinions I guess, but I don’t think you can discount an entire year just based on that. Matsui is on a downward trend and can’t field a position, whereas Pena had a rebound year last year and plays 1B well. Strikeouts are not an issue (see Granderson, Curtis).

Look at these.

Pena’s graph for the past few years versus Matsui. Yes, Pena gets a blip up going to Wrigley but Matsui is consistent while before the blip Pena has been trending downward. I don’t care about first base and you need patient hitters to balance out guys like Grandy. That’ all I have to say about it. I prefer Godzilla, who has proven he can play in NY versus Pena, if that is the route they are going:

It's an interesting thought

But no. Matsui isn’t the offensive threat he used to be and I think the Yankees want their DH to have a position.

I want to say Johnny Damon

He’s not that good anymore though. He still has decent speed but he doesn’t get on base at the rate he used to. Maybe being a Yankee against would rejuvenate him, but probably not.

So I have no idea for DH. Obviously Jones vs. lefties, but I wish there was a left handed bat on the market who still had some hitting ability.

Probably the best option on the market. He just seems like another all-or-nothing hitter. I don’t know, maybe I’m setting my expectations too high.

Whoever they get isn’t going to be asked to have a big role in the lineup. Thats A-Rod and Cano’s and Teixeira etc. job.

Unless they bring Chavez back.

If they can’t find anyone I suppose they could just invite a bunch of those guys to camp and have them compete for the DH vs. righties job. If they’re still available.

Carlos Pena. Please.

Pena against righties in 2011: .255/.388/.504, .383 wOBA, 140 wRC+. Just don’t let him play against lefties. That 59 wRC+ against them is just ugly.

I mean I don’t think they necessarily NEED a person playing everyday at DH anyway. Have Jones hit half the time, then bench him against righties and do a DH rotation with A-Rod, Tex, Swisher, whoever.

Thats a lot of games to be rotating the DH around

Say they face 40 lefties. Then the other 122 games they’re facing righties, and thats a lot of games where they’d have bench players starting in order to give guys half days off.

One nice thing about getting a DH like Pena or Damon or whoever is that they’ll get their playing time, but they aren’t players that can make a lot of money or command playing every day, so when those players do need rest they can sit the bench.

You’re probably right as in they don’t need one, but somebody to be the primary DH would be nice to have if they can be respectable.

Also

Once they get to playoff time, guys like A-Rod and Jeter and Swisher and Tex are playing every inning of every game in the field, so it would be nice to have a guy they can plug in to be the DH. Though I suppose they could acquire one at some point during the season if they need it.

Gold glove defender and a switch hitter with power. Hopefully he fixed his LH swing this offseason, because if he could return to 2009 form it would make the loss of Montero a bit easier. And help the Yankees win more games by not being a near automatic popout against righties.
