Pinstripe Alley New York Yankees Hall of Fame: The Candidates

Alright folks, let's try to make some progress in the Hall of Fame series! Here are the rules I have come up with as of now:

-No current players allowed in. Jeter, Rivera, etc can be let in after they retire.

-Automatics will be Hall of Famers with at least seven seasons in a Yankees uniform

-No players with less than four seasons in a Yankees uniform allowed in?

-Please comment any players you would like to be candidates, please, please no joke players. That means no Steve Sax!

-I will figure out a way to narrow down the candidates after I have all of them. Feel free to nominate as many deserving candidates as you want.

-If someone already posted a candidate you thought of, please do not repost the same player.

-Here are the automatics as of now, if you have a problem with an automatic, please comment so, and why.

Yogi Berra, Earle Combs, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Waite Hoyt, Willie Keeler, Tony Lazzeri, Mickey Mantle, Herb Pennock, Phil Rizzuto, Red Ruffing, Babe Ruth, Dave Winfield.

Managers will not be voted in in this process, so please do not nominate managers. Thank you.

Comment away, and if you have any suggestions comment them or email me!

Jorge Posada (assuming he is actually retired)
Andy Pettitte
Rickey Henderson (if four seasons is the cut-off; he actually played about four and one third seasons)

Man, I’d have real problems creating a Yankees Hall of Fame without Andy Pettitte.

by macomeau on Jan 13, 2012 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

i forgot about him...

Revised no players who didn’t own up to his roid using.

by ncquake24 on Jan 14, 2012 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Charlie Henrich, Bob Shawkey, Billy Martin, Joe Gordon, Joe Page, Jack Chesbro (automatic?).

Allie Reynolds. Jim “Catfish” Hunter (automatic?)

If anybody doesn’t know any of the players I have suggested, I would be happy to explain why I nominated them.

by designatedquitter on Jan 12, 2012 10:26 AM EST reply actions

Chesbro pitched 7 seasons for the Yankees, Hunter only 5.

by Andrew GM on Jan 12, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

And now some negatives

I like the automatic qualification standard, but I think Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt are among the weakest inductees into Cooperstown. Their Yankee years are among their best, but they might merit some discussion. Chesbro would be in the same boat, if he’s added to the automatic list.

Willie Keeler is almost the exact opposite. He was a great player, but his Yankee years weren’t his most spectacular. He might also be worth talking about.

Not saying I couldn’t be convinced of their cases, but I’d like to be convinced. Pennock and Hoyt are closer to my Yankee Hall of Fame than Keeler or Chesbro.

by macomeau on Jan 12, 2012 11:00 AM EST reply actions

I think the automatic should be 10 years as a Yankee not 7

I think anyone on the team that long would be guaranteed to have had several of their prime years here.

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Jan 12, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

I propose that we hold a recall on any automatic inductees

If at least two people think a given player should not be in, we hold a recall election on that player.
One independent person writes an argument in favor of the player’s induction, while a second independent person writes an argument against that player’s induction. Neither of these are the people to called for the recall.
Then we vote on the player’s induction.

Anyone else in favor of this idea?

by pastor2b on Jan 12, 2012 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

If that were the case,

the only one I’d actually nominate is Keeler. Looking at some quick numbers makes Hoyt and Pennock look much better in the YHoF than the regular one. Chesbro is further away, but not worth arguing about. Especially with that one 41 win season.

Keeler, on the other hand, was pretty close to a league-average player while he was a Yankee.

Decades (or eras)? Positional grouping? Get nominators to write posts (pleasedon’tchoosethis, pleasedon’tchoosethis, pleasedon’tchoosethis)?

There’s only about 4 or 5 guys named so far for whom I can’t really see a decent argument for supporting. There are several more I can’t see myself voting for, but whose support I would understand.

by macomeau on Jan 12, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

What's the standard?

Retired number worthy? Placque worthy? Less than that? Or is it just like the real hall of fame where every voter has his own standard?

by Let's Talk About Tex Baby on Jan 12, 2012 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

I don't that there's a standard yet,

but I can tell you who the 10? players I’d vote for so far are. Only three of the ones I actually nominated (two if Gordon is given an automatic pass). There’s a pretty big quagmire in the middle, as far as I’m concerned, when looking at quality and service with the Yankees.

My quick look is a pinch of rWAR and a dash of time with the Yankees. My slap-dash top 10 is: R. Henderson, Gordon, McDougald, Munson, Keller, Randolph, Mussina, Nettles, Stottlemyre, Henrich. I have Pettitte at 11, to replace Gordon.

Two players I note that are really humped by my quick look are Bernie, who played for quite a long time to go with his pretty good WAR (drags the average down) and Maris, who wasn’t a Yankee long, but was very good (high average, low total WAR). Roy White is very close to Bernie. Clemens and Wells are close to Maris.

by macomeau on Jan 12, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

Henderson over Mattingly?

Any Yankees HOF that DOESN’T have Donnie Baseball in it, isn’t a Yankees HOF. The guy was the face of the Yankees in the 80’s.

Not sure if Yankee HOF worthy

but Clete Boyer could be discussed. Offensive numbers weren’t spectacular, but her was an absolute Hoover at 3rd base. I think he gets short shrift because his contemporary at third in the AL was Brooks Robinson.

at the WAR totals for that list of 54 players not even including the 17 Brandon mentioned as automatics. Is it any wonder that we Yankees fans are spoiled.

That list does include 3 of the previously listed automatics: Hoyt, Pennock and Keeler. As well as Gordon and Chesbro, who meet the automatic criteria. I wanted to get a sense where they fit with the other nominees.

How does this sound? One position at a time, I will write one of the “mass poll” posts. Basically I will do this:

Day 1: List of players, b-ref pages, you discuss whether or not they should be in
Day 2: List of players, b-ref pages, you vote whether or not they should get in

There would probably be a lot less votes because of the multiple polls in one. This would be the poll format, just instead of the questions it would be

Should _ make it into PSA Yankees HOF yes or no?

What % should be necessary to get in for each player? I’d put no limit to # of players you can say yes to.

Thoughts?

Also, would love an assistant for this if anyone is interested in helping.

For percentage, I think 75% is fine, though I worry about too many people voting “Yes” and I wouldn’t be opposed to raising it higher.

O’Neil, Munson, Richardson (an aside, got 200+ hits one season and didn’t bat .300), Chambliss, Bernie, Stottlemyre, Donnie Baseball, Elston Howard, Willie Randolph, Bobby Murcer (simply because he was my favorite player growing up, SF exile not withstanding) Roy White, Ron Guidrey, Goose, Moose and of course Roger Maris.

Shouldn't retired numbers be automatics, too?

If the organization thinks that they’re iconic enough Yankees to retire the number, then they should be in.

They’ve been way too willy-nilly with number retiring, but that doesn’t mean we have to follow suit and be equally too inclusive.

How about Tino Maritinez? Here’s a long shot but… Scott Brosius played a huge part in the 3-peat run from 98 through 2000. His numbers are nothing special, but if its a team HOF maybe it should be what a player meant to the team and not just numbers.

by tlmjc on Jan 13, 2012 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Brosius was good in ‘98, eh in the other 3 seasons. You’d have to be very spectacular to get into the PSA Yankee HoF with only 4 years on the team.

Also I would argue that a ton of other players meant way more to the team that Scotty Bro.
