Hal Steinbrenner Met With Scott Boras About Edwin Jackson
Hal Steinbrenner met with Scott Boras last off-season, and that resulted in the horrible contract that was the Rafael Soriano signing. Now, the two have met again, this time to discuss starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.
There are some factors that make me worry less about this:
-Jackson would fill an actual need for the Yankees.
-Steinbrenner might have learned from his mistake.
-Jackson has solid numbers and does not look like the type of pitcher that would be a total bust in the Bronx.
Then again, there are some factors that make me worry a lot about this.
-The report made it seem like Brian Cashman was not present for the meeting.
-I was under the impression that Cashman had full control of the team, including meetings with potential players and agents.
-Again, last time Steinbrenner and Boras met the result was the Soriano contract.
-Steinbrenner has said before he is a little worried about the rotation, so he is more prone to making a mistake.
Thoughts?

If it's more than a year, I will scream
I’ll scream less if the future years are team options rather than player options
It’ll be more than a year. I hear the Yankees are pushing for a 1-2 year deal and the Boras camp is pushing for more.
If the Yankees could get Jackson on a Madson type deal it’d be one of the best moves of the offseason. Doubt it happens, though, as Jackson must be sick of moving around already, given the amount of teams he’s played for.

I’d really rather we not get in the habit of bailing Boras out every year when he has a client still looking for a job of January.
Anything over 3/30 for E-Jax would be a mistake. Unless they give him a bunch of opt outs and put him in the bullpen, it wouldn’t be as bad as the Soriano deal, but still I really hope the approach is “on our terms or not at all.”

I don’t disagree. I just think a 1 yr deal is pretty harmless. I’d even go 2…

A three year deal would keep him on payroll for the 2014 season. Anything three years or over would probably significantly hinder the Yankees’ ability to get under the $189M mark.

He’s 28. And a starter. If Steinbrenner is going to interfere – and let’s face it, he owns the team so it’s not like he has to answer to anyone – at least he’s interfering for a team need.
Hopefully it’d be for two years so 2014 isn’t affected.

Just wait till Boras sends alcohol to Hank’s cave, then calls him up to discuss contracts.

I think Boras and the Steins are friends
and Boras calls them up to help him get a big contract every year. I don’t think the booze is even necessary.
Yeah, but Hank + booze = Soriano’s contract looking good.

It's Cashman's job
to meet the agents and get the deals done. I got it that Hal is the owner, but Cash is the man in the organization whose actual job it is to do these things. Give him the required direction and purpose then get out of the way unless there’s a problem. Meddling by owners et al has never been good for any team. Save the payroll, stick to the talent that’s already in our own system, we built it, so trust it.
If Hal signs Jackson without Cashman involved
Cashman should walk. He just got a new contract and has been pushing for more team control, which should already be his because that’s his job! No one else has to deal with this crap.
Yeah it's insulting he's ran them well for years.

I like e-jax
I think he would be good mid-rotation starter on a contender, but I think we’ve got enough mid-rotation guys. Need a #2.

Why not?
Just don’t let him face Boston. They hammer him. He’s pretty good against all other division rivals.
Romine!
Would absolutely LOVE to have Edwin on board.
Been saying since day one I’d prefer him to any of the other options, including CJ and Yu Darvish. He’s a proven talent and won’t cost too much.
Boone Logan is a good boy. So is David Robertson. Team A.J.
here's a good comparison of last 3 years between garza and edwin jackson

i’d give him a one year contract with a club option for 2013. i honestly dont see oswalt contributing from april to october like edwin jackson can.

Hate to see the amount given...
I think if it was a 2 yr deal, chances are we would overpay. I would rather them pass on this deal.

Of course, we don't know all the circumstances, but
maybe Steinbrenner is starting to get a little anxious about Cashman not addressing an obviously glaring need, especially it was Cashman himself who said “pitching, pitching, pitching” at the winter meetings.
