New York Yankees News - January 11, 2012

Once again, there isn't a plethora of Yankee related news circling the depths of the internet these days. However, we try our absolute best to dig up any and all links that may be of interest to our readers. Here's what January 11 holds in store, Yankee and MLB related...

1) The Cincinnati Reds are reportedly close to acquiring former Philadelphia Phillies closer Ryan Madson. The market for him shrank a bit after the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon, but the Reds are willing to dish out $10 million for one year to the established righty. Basebal-reference put together some of his notable stats, inlcuding a 2.37 ERA, 9.2 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, and a 48.8% ground ball rate in 60 2/3 innings last season. He also saved 32 games.

The move should be a good one for the Reds as they shore up the back-end of their rotation.

2) Also thanks to b-ref is the following:

Some agents are showing renewed aggression, with spring training five weeks away. One executive Olney spoke to noted, "There are some good value buys out there. If you've got some extra cash, there are some good pitchers left." Among free agent starters, I think Bartolo Colon, Jeff Francis, Jon Garland, Rich Harden, Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda, Kevin Millwood, Roy Oswalt, Brad Penny, Joel Pineiro, and Joe Saunders will land big league deals, with a few more in the running.
Thoughts on a low-risk, high reward signing? Doesn't appear to be a bad idea as it has certainly worked out before with Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia.

We should pick up Bartolo for another season

Sure, he’s probably only good for 100 to 150 or so innings, but 1/2 a season will round out (pun not originally intended, but let’s go with it eh) the rotation and let the kids get some more time in AAA ball.

Can’t fix it in the news, but Madson is getting $8.5 million guaranteed plus incentives.

MISSING GEORGE

Ok I get that we won 97 games last year and we have talented UNPROVEN pitchers in the minors but come on! Do the yankees now think that making the playoffs every year is the ultimate goal? To win a championship you need PROVEN reliable pitching! Do we continue to think we can put our fate in the hands of AJ or Hughes or gosh Garcia! Budget or not offer Oswalt a one year deal or Kuroda, somebody! If George were still running the show we would have already signed a reliable starter by now! Understand that I think the offense and the bull pen are fine! Come on Hal open the wallet a little, I am 62 and want one more championship before I die! PLEASE!!!!

I don't know that any of those guys guarantees a championship

And I don’t know that any of them improve the odds so much that signing them is a better course of option than standing pat. Maybe someone better becomes available during the season, or maybe we save our money and sign a better option next off-season.

If George was still running the show, we’d have 3-4 more awful contracts for 40+ year olds stacked up and be in a bigger mess than we are currently.

Edwin Jackons 6 years $100M

Ryan Madson 5 years $60M

Jesus Montero would be traded for Ken Phelps

by jetanumba2 on Jan 11, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

It would be more like

Roy Oswalt for 6 yrs, $100 million. He’d have done better with Montero and would have pulled the trigger on getting a trade done for Halladay or Lee when Cashman wouldn’t include Jesus.

and LOL at winning a championship before you croak. Spoiled till the end, huh.

The Yankees just signed Donnie Baseball jr.

We actually have something close to a first baseman in the system now.

Why not trade Billingsly straight up for Montero? Chad will do fantastic for the Yankees and not cost 20 million!

Billingsley is not at all a good match for a hitting prospect like Montero.
