What do we make of the ARod situation?

I mean, we’ve won all year without him, or at least without him at 100%. But damn, that puts a hole in the lineup.

We lose some power and statistically we lose some defense

But I would rather have a healthy Nunez/Chavez vs a less than 100% Ardo. But Ardo will probably gut it out for the postseason

The knee and defense worries me

With questions about the pitching after Nova, a missed ball could mean a game.

Ardo at half speed > Nunez at the plate, I get that. But defense…

wait

are you seriously suggesting that a-rod in his current (i.e., less than 100%) condition is not still better than 19-errors-in-not-so-very-many-games nunez? isn’t the knock on nunez—-and the reason anyone can suggest ramiro pena over him with a straight face—all about his lack of defense? uh, i’ll go with the gold-glover, thank you very much…

i would MUCH prefer a healthy a-rod, obviously, but i agree with gman here that the yanks are still a beast without him (or without him at centaur level)…

If you want to be the best, you’ve got to beat the better teams in the league. Whatever happens, Tampa Bay and Boston both pose threats for New York (if they even make the ALCS).

Personally, I’d love to see the Yankees smack Boston around in the ALCS. Let them know that they’re not even better than the 2011 version of the Yankees, let alone sniff the 1927 version.

Yeah, but them missing the playoffs entirely would be so much more demoralizing to them and their fans.

Personally, I don’t care whether they get knocked out now or later. It’s hilarious if they don’t make the playoffs, but being scared of them is foolish.

I thought the Yankees lucked out when they crossed paths with the Tigers and Indians in the 2006 and 2007 playoffs because they weren’t playing the Angels. Those both backfired pretty damn quickly.

Bring on whoever, the Yankees can beat any team in baseball.

by Chris McKeown on Sep 28, 2011 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, it’s not that I like our chances against Tampa better or anything, they have good pitching so they might even be the tougher team to face, I just don’t want the Red Sox to make the playoffs.

by Wraithpk on Sep 28, 2011 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If I had a choice, I’d choose to play Boston in the playoffs. They’re stumbling in and I’d love to see New York put them back where they belong.

Either way, I’m more worried about playing Detroit or Texas in the ALDS.

Nothing we did worked in that series. When they pitched around Hamilton, Cruz beat us. The Rangers lineup is waaay better than Detroit’s.

Probably the same way.

Iffy rotation outside of CC and Nova, scary lineup. One intriguing aspect, one that you’d really rather not have to face.

Honestly, I’d be perfectly content if Betances threw a gem over seven innings and then the pen shit the bed.

And I care about the Sox. They’re a dangerous team that has had our number this year. If we can play a part in keeping them out of the playoffs AND it doesn’t hurt our own playoff standing, I am all for it.

I don't care about the season matchup

The Yankees have won the past couple of series, and recent history trumps ancient history. I think the Yankees can beat Boston, and if they don’t, they weren’t good enough to win the WS anyway.

I do want to see Boston miss the playoffs, because I’m spiteful as hell. But I’d rather see it happen in a 163rd game, since it tires out the winning team even more. Though, it’s too bad the Yankees won’t get to play that team.

by waw on Sep 28, 2011 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, them losing in 163 would be better, but I’d rather not rely on the Orioles winning a game to make it happen.

It's weird

The Yankees and baseball are the only team/sport I follow where there’s regular season games at the end of the year that regularly mean very little for the team I root for

The Giants, well the short NFL season means the late games still usually have implications (especially for an occasionally borderline playoff team)

As for the Islanders…well….yeah….

The thing is

Everyone already knows the Red Sox aren’t the dream team. They still will be laughed at for the collapse, and if my hopes work out they will end up losing to the Rays in the playoff game.

If they are truly this bad they won’t win in the playoffs, anyway.

The only person that will say anything good about the Red Sox is Gammons, who will tweet “beep boop free falling go red sox i’m a robot” or something. The rest of the sane media will know they aren’t the dream team everyone claimed them to be.

Go Orioles!

So until I invent my time machine, I wouldn’t hate the mega-division model. I still think 4 teams is too many, and these teams are demonstrating. The Giants were dangerously close to a playoff birth, and they’re crummy. Certainly not more teams.

Well, I’m not sure if it’s intentional wording or not, but we have a separate thing called clinics that can be done during law school. They are actually law focused and usually based on the kind of law the student plans on practicing. Those are very valuable for the future, the mandatory pro bono work, not so much in my opinion.

I was thinking back on all the years I've watched the Yanks and all the other years I recall so well

from reading books, and I can say with reasonable certainty that the Yanks haven’t had 3 guys with 110 or more RBI in a season in long time. They had four with over 100 in 1999 and maybe 2 other years in the 30’s. For what it’s worth that’s a great accomplishment.

Wouldn't read into it too much

Garcia is certainly the leading candidate, but Game 3 is on regular rest from today. So if they were to have him starting, then pitching him out of the pen today would just get him work one more time before that game.

Is that likely? No, but it’s possible. So I don’t think we should really guess one way or another until Girardi announces is (after this game I assume).

I doubt they'd use him anyways

And he’s probably the fourth starter in an ALCS and World Series, so I’d rather they kept him stretched out off of the roster if he’s not starting in the ALDS, rather than stick him in the bullpen where he’ll likely bench for each game.

The Rays/Sox scenario is exactly why I complain about and question Girardi’s bullpen management or other decisions. Coming down to the last game, I’d be thinking of “those games” where he used Ayala or some other mop int he 9th with more talented relievers in the pen.

I’m sure the Rays or Red Sox can think of games like that.
