So if the Rays lose tonight

Can we assume Boston said they would foot the bill for their roster next season?

I am totally going to move the Tampa Bay Bucs to Las Vegas in Madden now

by Branta on Sep 26, 2011 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

not just heat

but i mean the way the city is. I’ve never been there so i don’t know, but to me it doesn’t seem like the place to have an open stadium. It would have to be one of those stadiums that is planted right in the middle of the city and i don’t know if it could work. I’m not basing this on any type of facts, just something i vaguely remember hearing and stuff

by jetanumba2 on Sep 26, 2011 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Vegas could have an open stadium

Their minor league stadium is open. It would work. Retractable roof all the way though, because it can get brutal

Parking could be a problem

They would have to use a garage type structure.

And vegas has nice buses, and cheap buses, taxis, a monorails, and could shuttle to offsite parking.

I agree, at least under Selig

Fanbase may not support it

UNLV rebels draw huge crowds, it is a basketball town. The 51’s get no attention here and you need regular fans, idk if Vegas can do that

They’d have to shell out for a retractable roof if they did because there are some weeks over the summer where it rains almost every night here. Not for long periods of time, but a lot of random thunderstorms that would cause delays.

They put an MLB stadium on the ballot a few years ago in my hometown and it failed pretty dismally, if I remember correctly. I think that was the 2nd time they had tried to get one to pass.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not, but...

this is pretty much the only reason I could think of on why so many people “hate” Romine. Same thing with Martin.

by Yankees10 on Sep 26, 2011 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact that Martin was awful for half the season or that Romine is a AA hitter.

Jesus Montero fangirl

by WhatwouldJeterdo on Sep 26, 2011 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I had no problem with the "hate" during those months where he was just terrible

Montero should have been up then and its ridiculous that he wasnt considering how bad Martin was. I just thought he should have been given more credit when he was actually doing well. It just seems like the guy was doomed before he even got here and people were rooting for hiim to not do well, so that Montero would be called up. This is just my opinion, feel free to disagree…

by Yankees10 on Sep 26, 2011 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anyone actively watched games hoping Martin would fail.

Why would they? When he did, nothing was done about it. It was blatantly obvious that they were going to stick with him for reasons I can’t understand. I, and others I’m sure, got sick of watching him continually fail because that hurts the Yankees. It didn’t help that we had a perfectly logical backup plan that was ignored. When A-Rod slumps, we have no real choice but to deal with it because the comparable options just aren’t there, so that’s why I think Martin got the amount of “hate?” he got. There was an option that could have been better if given a chance.

He’s had a pretty poor September too, but apparently people are over it.

I'll agree with that

Romine is ready defensively, but he still has a long way to go with the bat. If he improves his hitting in AAA next year then I could definitely see him possibly having a future with this team. Especially if Montero becomes more of a Victor Martinez and less of a full time catcher like Piazza was.

I think it's more so at catcher than anything else

Having a great defensive catcher that can block the ball and throw out baserunners is huge. Much bigger than a top defensive infielder or something of that sort.

Thats what we’ve seen out of Martin this year. He’s disappeared at times with the bat, but he’s provided excellent defense, from throwing out runners to blocking to calling a game (though the last one is not nearly as important as the Yankees think). He’s the best defensive starter the Yanks have had since Girardi himself I believe.

Defensively?

He hasn’t. I have no idea. I just know that the Yankees have seen Romine play a lot and they think very highly of him defensively, where as Montero is thought of as only serviceable at best behind the plate. I’m just assuming they have some sort of idea of what they’re talking about.

by jetanumba2 on Sep 26, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually the only player that will a pure DH in the future will be A-Rod. Jeter will remain at short the next two years. Teixeira will play first his entire time here. No one else is under contract that long. So since A-Rod isn’t ready to play there full-time yet the Yankees will need someone to plug at DH for the next few years.

by Briceratops on Sep 26, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, Jesus is going to be here through A-Rod’s contract and beyond I hope, so having him be a full time DH would eventually bite the Yankees in the ass. Thats why he needs to catch.

Ah, what I said came across wrong.

I mean we don’t have a place on the team for someone to be signed or come up from the minors with the Pure DH tag on them. We need that spot for giving people half days off and eventually just A-Rod, and that isn’t worth taking Jesus’ bat out of the lineup for when he is perfectly capable of catching.

But what I think will happen next season is that Montero DH’s most of the time and is the backup catcher.

by Briceratops on Sep 26, 2011 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd really, really prefer he split time.

Martin will be there unless he’s somehow traded, and proved this year that catching every day takes too much of a toll on him. Giving Jesus 3-4 days a week behind the plate and then DHing him the others while Martin catches wouldn’t really draw complaint from me.

I think I heard something that said the players wouldn’t agree to it unless they had balanced schedules for every team, to insure that every team has the same chance to make the playoffs. That would be a good thing I guess, seeing as it eliminates interleague and they don’t play the Red Sox 18 times a year anymore. But I’d rather have the unbalanced schedules than an extra playoff team.
