Was that in the defense display?
I remember on a Sunday Night Baseball Yanks-Sox in ‘08, they put Pavano in the pitcher’s spot when it was Ponson pitching for us.
Angels lost 6-5

If Montero is going to be on the postseason roster
and he’s not going to catch, what are we going to do about a backup?
Did the Yankees play Posada every game or did they have a backup start a game or two? I imagine they kept him in every game.
I think they're going to have Martin catch every game
with Jesus and Jorge splitting DH duties, and the Yankees praying they never need an emergency catcher. So no backup.
by long time listener on Sep 25, 2011 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Nothing says Montero or Jorge couldn't be an emergency catcher for a couple innings
But I think you’re correct
Did they say somewhere he wouldn't catch?
I have to believe Martin’s the starter, and will go every night in the postseason, with Montero as backup and Posada as emergency (if he’s on the roster)
No days off in the playoffs
I thought the only way to get Montero on the roster is if he replaces an injured player at the same position.
Which means he would have to replace Cervelli as the backup catcher. Even if its only on paper.
Is that correct?
Practically, Martin will catch every game
by NYYankeeDude on Sep 25, 2011 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think so
A position player can replace any injured position player. A pitcher can replace any injured pitcher.

You replace hitter for hitter and pitcher.
They can try to put Reegie Corona or Colin Curtis on the roster and replace him with Montero.

But unfortunately, these RedSux are really the sort of toxic hazardous waste that requires much more than a broom
ATL finishes against PHI, STL against HOU?
Holy crap.
here's an interesting hypo
Say it’s still 3-0 after 5, and the rains come. Do the Red Sox want to wait out the rain, or do they concede and get the Yankees down to Tampa to increase the chances that the Yankees put out at least a B+ lineup tomorrow against the Rays?
by long time listener on Sep 25, 2011 6:54 PM EDT reply actions
Why would we do that?
We have home field.
I hope we see two lineups like we saw today the next couple of days, then we play the regulars in a tune up on Wednesday.

if we have to stay until midnight to finish the game
Joe might just give everyone who matters a day off tomorrow, because they won’t get into Tampa until very early in the morning.
by long time listener on Sep 25, 2011 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions
they're going to wait it out
they need to win badly and the Yankees won’t be too competitive against the Rays
I think MLB makes the call
since it’s their last meeting of the year, and I gotta think MLB wants the game finished, however long that may take
Of course, if you knew that, and this is about what Boston would want, I guess they’d want to keep playing, take the chance at a comeback rather than concede

Just setting the glove up in the right spot
And I will say that it is important- pitchers are trained to throw the ball where the glove is placed, so if you have the glove in completely the wrong spot then it makes it much more difficult for the pitcher to locate. Thats true.
On the other hand, I have never seen ONE catcher in major league baseball that does not do this, so in all honestly that particular phrase is, like you said, completely meaningless.
Welcome to the Majors, Jesus!
Now PLAY HIM MOAR!!

Let’s just think about this
in late August, the organization sees that there’s an overwhelming odds that the Red Sox will make the playoffs. They decide to put millions of dollars under fake names on bets that the Rays will make the playoffs. All proceeds split by all members.
Occasionally, the Sox put up massive games just to make it seem like they’re not intentionally throwing it. And a few players (Ellsbury) continue to play as normal to avoid suspicion.

It’s lost a lot of the fun, once Ortiz got caught on the steroids.
Partially because their big victory over us was tainted by steroid
abusers Manny & Ortiz. After they both got caught, their amazing play just
vanished, but also because New England just has no heart anymore, they dumped
all their hero’s, and these new guys are not up to the great rivalry.

Furthermore, the comparison has to do with how they are valued by their manager. Mathis was seen as better than Napoli, who is by far the better player, because he was a “defense first” catcher. The same type of stupidity is being seen with Montero and Romine now.

Big difference between baseball, and basketball and football
In baseball, the game plays itself out and everybody on the team needs to contribute in some way, and often in big spots in order to get a win. It’s not about the star. It’s about the team.
In basketball or to a lesser extent football, it can be all about the star. You can set up plays for your best players at the ends of games and in crunch time. Can’t do that in baseball. If your best player is up, great. If not, nothing you can do.
Welcome to the Majors, Jesus!
Now PLAY HIM MOAR!!
Exactly
It’s one event at a time, which is why I don’t ever bother with basketball statistics. Baseball statistics make sense because they’re discrete events, and yeah, that really appeals to the nerd in me.

by Hasan Paliwala on Sep 25, 2011 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Well they're different games
I love them both though. Basketball tends to keep me into it for the entire game, while baseball I can sit back and relax, and then get into it during big moments.
Of course, the NBA season won’t start until March anyways so it’s gonna be all Giants all winter. Nothing else.

I find it difficult to fault Joe for bringing in the best reliever in his pen
and the best closer of all time.
In a tie game? And when the previous reliever threw 7 pitches last inning?
by bloppy_ploppy on Sep 25, 2011 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
And if Soriano started this inning
And Mo came in with runners on and the game was lost, that would be Joe’s fault, too.
Thus, I don’t find fault in letting him go a full inning.
How is that even a comparable situation?
by bloppy_ploppy on Sep 25, 2011 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Why wait? Because the game could possibly go into extra innings and you have a serviceable reliever who just pitched an inning in 7 pitches. Just stick with that guy (Soriano)

I don't know.
There was a comment there the other day about how Girardi made a mockery of the game for using all those relievers the other day against Tampa and now the MLBN guys were just saying that they should only expand to 28 or so because 40 lets them do stuff like pinch run Golson for Tex in the 9th.

Papelbon?
Hasn’t A-Rod hit multiple game winning HR against him over the past few years?
I know his pinch hit success isn’t too high, but I’d want A-Rod or even Jeter up ahead of Austin Romine. A-Rod’s gonna have to come in anyways to play third base I think, so use his bat!

Good thing Teixeira is out of the game.
Pinch running for him and then not stealing worked out really well.
Think it's safe to say
Austin romine =/= Jesus Montero
I mean there hasn't ever been much a debate about it, has there?
Nevertheless, this shouldn’t be taken as indicative of Romine’s future.
This is like a spring traing game for the Yankees. Red Sox? Like game 7 of the WS

Without his Steroids Ortiz does not have the strength to hit it out

Proctor
In six of his last 8 appearances he gave up runs. Today is 7 of 9. Joe gave up on the game by putting him in. Ridiculous that he is even on the team.
I can't believe that Girardi didn't even try to win this game
He had several opportunities to PH Jete or A-Rod to get the winning run, and he never went for it.
Obviously, bringing in Proctor was his way of avoiding having to ever use Jete or A-Rod in this game.

But we gave the Sux a life that we should not have.
This will allow someone, probably Detroit, to get an easy 1st round victory against the Red Sox and be able to properly align their staff for round 2 against us – with Verlander and Fister. This could easily be a fatal error.
