Nova Continues Hot Streak, Yankees Top Rays, 5-0
Ivan Nova tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings and Curtis Granderson pitched in with 4 RBI's to help lead the Yankees to a 5-0 win over Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.
Nova wasn't perfect, and he got a bit lucky in the first few innings, but he was great at what he does best: getting ground ball outs. He was also efficient, throwing 67 of his 103 pitches for strikes (65%).
Nova got into some trouble in the seventh, but escaped it in classic Houdini fashion. With the bases loaded and no one out, Nova got Desmond Jennings to pop out to shallow left field and then forced B.J. Upton to ground into an inning ending, rally killing, double play.
His final line: 7 2/3 IP, 6 hits, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 10-4 GO/AO.
Is there really more to say about Nova? It seems as if he turns in outings like this every time he takes the mound. The Yankees are 13-3 in his last 16 starts. The rookie has gotten better and better as the season has progressed, and Yankees fans should be excited.
Boone Logan and Luis Ayala combined to make the last four outs painless.
As for the offense tonight, look no further than team MVP Curtis Granderson. The man drove in four runs, three of which came on a bases clearing double in the second. His other RBI, a single, knocked in Brett Gardner during the 5th inning.
Derek Jeter, Eric Chavez, who drove in the other run, Russell Martin, and Gardner also pitched in with multi-hit games, while Teixeira, A-Rod, Cano, and Swish also reached base twice.
Think about that for a second. Every starter reached base at least twice tonight, which is fantastic. But they only scored five runs? On the night, the Yankees left 18 men on base and went just 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position. They left the bases loaded on three separate occassions. Hopefully, that's just a strange outlier.
At least Nova pitched well, and that's no outlier. I could get used to watching him tip his cap.
Play of the Game: Granderson's bases clearing double (14.1%).

ROY?
Wonder how he’ll do.
Bring lawyers, guns and money to get me out of this one! Stand in the Fire.
He is definitely making a case for it
At the very least, I would put him in the top 5, if not the winner
I feel like he won't win
not because he hasn’t earned it, but because there will be some anti-Yankee bias

Just like that anti-Yankee bias that has kept Jeter from all those gold gloves.
But seriously, I don’t think he will win because there are more deserving candidates. He should finish near the top though.

Nova would have had to have pitched the last dozen or so games for that analogy to hold.

Best of both worlds
Yanks win and Red Sox lose. Magic number for playoffs down to 2 and division down to 3.

I don't know if you've already discussed this
but would you rather have the Rays or Red Sox win the Wild Card? My dad and I were discussing it tonight. If you’ve already discussed it, could you summarize the argument?
I don't really care one way or the other
I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing the Sox collapse to epically that they don’t make it into the playoffs. On top of that, we do seem to be playing better against TB than Boston. At the same time, however, Boston is doing really poorly lately, so they probably wouldn’t make it past the first round, and if they did we would probably beat them.
That's what we were talking about
I would personally love to see a Red Sox collapse, but I’m not sure how that would play out for the Yankees. I see two ways this could play out: the Rays could 1) come charging into the playoffs with all the momentum behind them or 2) use all their energy to knock the Sox out of contention and run on fumes into the playoffs. The Sox could 1) be completely demoralized when they limp to the finish line or 2) use their near-elimination to motivate their team towards the Series. It’s gonna get interesting.

In terms of who
the Yanks play in playoffs, I don’t care. Seeing epic fail by Boston, priceless! Speaking od which, wonder how the commentary is going over on OTM?

They are eating their own tails in despair over many things, not the least of which is that they now have to count on us to help them hobble into the playoffs. As much as I’m enjoying it, though, I’m wary of gloating too much; I keep thinking about our 2000 team and how badly we fell apart at the end of the regular season, then turned it around in the playoffs. There’s so much firepower in Boston’s offense and they played so well between May and August that it’s hard to imagine them continuing to perform at the abysmal level of the past several weeks. But who knows? Maybe they will!
Still concerned about our own rotation, once you get past CC and Nova. Right now none of the remaining four starters inspires too much faith in me, but maybe our bullpen can carry them.
Farewell and thanks to #46.

Boston would probably be the better playoff team. They have a better offense, and their pitching 1-2 is as good as Tampa Bay, but Tampa has a better 3 and 4. I want Tampa to win, though, just because it would be funny to see the Red Sox collapse after all the preseason talk about them being the best team ever and 100 wins being a shoe-in.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
The Rays, hands down
This is sadistic pleasure IGYAR speaking here, but honestly if the Red Sox collapse, it will be one of the most historic collapses in baseball history, and there is no word to describe my joy over seeing that and seeing their fans wallow in despair. I imagine it’d be the same feeling Gollum had when he finally got the One Ring back after so long.
Plus, if by chance the Yankees lose in the ALDS, I want the Rays to take the whole thing so that there’s a better chance they get out of the Trop Dump and move to a more respectable stadium.

The Rays winning is the better story.
It combines a great comeback with a surprising collapse (nothing like the Mets in ’07 or the Sox themselves in ’78, of course.) For the first time ever, though, my source of fun in watching the Red Sox struggle is not how their fans are reacting, but rather how it proves all those preseason prognostications wrong.
In terms of who the Yankees face in the playoffs, I want whichever team is actually better. There’s no real shame in losing to a great team, and there’s lots of glory. By that standard, I think you have to go with the Red Sox, still, especially if Buchholz comes back.
Usqueadbaugham! Anam muck an dhoul ! Did ye drink me doornail?
I'm actually enjoying the two teams fight for a wild card spot
If this goes down to the wire, both teams will have been forced to play their regular players thus not rested for the playoffs. The Rays winning the Wild Card would be good narrative.

Good thing the Sox saw the rays lost and decided to lose today too to make it interesting
Because being the greatest team every assembled means they can pick and chose when they want to win or lose.
They’re 3 games out in the loss column with Boston only having 7 games to play. Probably too much to make up unless they don’t lose another game for the rest of the year.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
That would be unlikely, but certainly not impossible.

And more inappropriate humor!
I – for one – would like to praise our cruel pinstriped saviors…
… and their mysterious ability to take the field without it looking like a twisted modern interpretive dance version of a shitty time-lapsed documentary of the sadistic career of a serial stray dog rapist/murderer. That really seems to be working out for them. Perhaps this is something the Red Sox could – given time – replicate?
No, that’s just fucking silly.

I think it was a commenter at OTM who cynically observed that the Red Sox’ 2011 season slogan, “We won’t rest until order has been restored,” is taking on a whole new meaning—that it now appears the Sox are attempting to restore the Curse that they thought they had banished by beating us in 2004.
Farewell and thanks to #46.

I just realized something...
If Boston loses the wild card, that puts Granderson in the drivers seat to win the MVP. There are still enough people who will only vote for guys on playoff teams and who won’t vote for pitchers. That’s another reason to root for Boston failing.
The Savior has come, and he is glorious. #63
If Bostong does not make the playoffs
Verlander would win MVP.
I'm pretty sure Verlander will not win the MVP
and will only get the CYA as he currently leads the AL in Wins, ERA, K, and IP. If the AL Central race was much closer with the second place team not being 12.5 games behind, you could make an argument for Verlander to win the MVP.

Nova is such a pleasant surprise all season long
after he came back from his stint in the minors, he has looked like a more complete pitcher.
Team Monster:
JPP
"Da Real" Scott
Greg JONES
Herzlich
Paysinger
Jacquin Williams
and SASH
13-3 last 16 starts
His previous start before this one, he pitched 7 1/3 and gave up 1 run and the bullpen lost it (ND for Nova). He also had ND’s in the other two. He hasn’t lost a decision since June 3 when he pitched 6 innings and gave up only 2 earned. He’s been fantastic.

It almost always feels like the guys have extra energy when Nova's pitching,
especially last night. With all those defensive plays they turned in last night, it was like they were determined to be on Web Gems.
Oh, and does anyone else feel like our pitchers, both SP and RP, have been getting out of a shit ton of bases loaded/second & third with < 2 outs type of jams this month?

Well with Robertson that's just par for the course; I'm actually surprised he's had so many 1-2-3 innings lately!
Nova does seem to be getting himself into trouble quite a bit lately, but I am glad he’s been working his way out of it effectively.
Yes, and Jeter’s lack of range was clearly evident

According to today's Providence Journal, many Red Sox fans would rather miss the playoffs than cheer Pinstripes.
This is why I responded to the "Do we spend too much time hating the Red Sox’ post with ‘they hate us way more than we hate them.’ The fans who can’t root for the Yankees to beat TBay are actually saying that if the Sox can’t win their way in, then they don’t deserve to go. Or they delude themselves with ’I’m not rooting for the Yankees to win, I’m pulling for the Rays to lose.’
Personally, I think if Curtis hits a homer today, they should all be forced to sing a chorus of ‘The Grandyman Can,’ but that may just be me.
