Game 114 Preview: Angels at Yankees

A.J. Burnett will take the ball for the Yankees tonight, looking to end a minor two-game losing streak. Burnett has not pitched well lately, with his last quality start coming on June 29th. Since July began, A.J. has only pitched through the sixth twice, so let's hope he can provide some distance in tonight's game.

For the season, Burnett is 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA, 4.67 FIP, 1.35 WHIP, and 7.8 K/9.

On average, the Yankees score 4.83 runs during A.J.'s starts, but that is inflated due to an 18 run game and a 10 run game. If it seems like he hasn't gotten much run support to you, you may be right. The Yankees have scored four runs or less in twelve of Burnett's twenty three starts.

Opposing Burnett will be Dan Haren, who has put together a fantastic season. Haren is 12-6 with a 2.81 ERA, 2.72 FIP, 0.97 WHIP, and 7.27 K/9.

Haren throws a low 90's fastball, a mid-to-high 80's cutter, a high 70's curveball, and a mid-80's splitter. His cutter is by far his best pitch, registering thrity four runs above average this season on fangraphs. The rest of his pitch values can be found here.

Yankees Lineup: GGBG, Jeter, Grandy, Tex, Cano, Swish, Chavez (DH), Martin, Wardo

Angels Lineup: Aybar, Kendrick, Abreu DH, Hunter, Trumbo, Wells, Izturis, Bourjos, Mathis

A.J. Burnett vs. current Angels

Bobby Abreu, Vernon Wells and Russell Branyan have given Burnett trouble throughout the years, as has Jeff Mathis is limited plate appearances. Burnett has kets the rest of the batters who have faced him in check.

Dan Haren vs. current Yankees

Only Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira have hit Haren well. Jeter has a .318 batting average and a .423 OBP against him, while Tex has a .940 OPS. No other Yankee has hit Haren well, especially Russell Martin, who is just 5-for-32 against him.

So what does a good start do? What does a bad start do?

Can the Binder please elaborate?

I like this lineup

except for the fact that it doesn’t include Montero like I predicted it would.

Is Chavez at third?

Chavez = DH

Just once I'd like someone to call me "Sir," without adding, "You're making a scene."

Calling Samson right now

He’s going to be freaking dominant now. And I love Haren and all, but I hope he throws a stinker today.

Interesting article on Francisco Cervelli, and it shows how lucky the Yankees are to have Tony Pena. It also shows that maybe Montero would benefit a little bit in the major leagues by being able to learn from this guy.

Get in line to complain

I’ll let you have my spot. I’m magnanimous like that.

Seriously, I have no idea why Nunez can’t DH. Maybe Girardi wants Chavez to ease back in? I dunno, grasping at straws here.

Nunez is not allowed to play third

and apparently Chavez plays DH cuz he’s less likely to get hurt running the bases and swinging the bat there

The rain stopped by me, and I’m about 10 or 12 miles from the stadium

I still don't understand why the new Yankee Stadium doesn't have one

If you spend 3 billion dollars on a stadium located in a place where it always rains, build a retractable roof!

just a thought

it might be because the Yankees don’t have the extra room for one; besides the fact that it’s a lot of money. their stadium is in a very populated area, unlike places such as Seattle with Safeco Field

Montero

should be in the big leagues soon. Banuelos will probably be here too this year a little later on

How in the world does the weather report of 100% chance of rain become 20% in a matter of minutes?

Good thing I decided not to go to the game…

OR IS IT?!

Unless you're a pitcher or Gustavo Molina, kindly SWING THE BAT and ignore the Binder's bunt signal.
